Cheyenne Civic Center Season Will Include Two 'Mamma Mia!' Performances

Roy A. Barnes
Ten acts will make up the 2011-2012 30th anniversary season of the Cheyenne Civic Center, with the smash hit musical Mamma Mia! featuring a double performance and the Vienna Boys Choir making their debut in Wyoming's capital. The first chance for ticket purchases by non-season ticket holders is scheduled for June 20. I've been an usher for the Cheyenne Civic Center since the 2004-2005 season, but what I write is my own observations. All showings will take place at 730 pm MT unless otherwise stated.

Kenny Rogers kicks off the Cheyenne Civic Center 2011-2012 Season

The renowned country and pop singer Kenny Rogers, who's been performing for 50-plus years, is scheduled to kick off the 30th season of the performing arts complex on Oct. 7. He is known for many hits, including "The Gambler," "Twenty Years Ago," "Lady," etc.

Three of the 10 acts due to appear in Cheyenne have been here before. The musical "Fiddler on the Roof," the second show in the season, is scheduled for Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. Next, the Vienna Boys Choir will reappear at the Cheyenne Civic Center on Nov. 12, one of the four touring groups that make up this iconic singing institution. Mannheim Steamroller Christmas will once again be helping to get locals into the Christmas spirit with their Nov. 22 appearance. And closing out the 2011 half of the season will be Monty Python's Spamalot on November 30, which is based on the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Opening the 2012 half of the season will be the Jan. 20 playing of Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two Woman Show . Lawrence gained notoriety with her "Mama" character on The Carol Burnett Show, then with her own sitcom Mama's Family. With over 45 million viewers, Mamma Mia! Is expected to add around 3,000 more to their number (the Civic Center holds just under 1,500 seats) after touring Wyoming's capital city Feb. 11 via matinee (3 p.m.) and evening showings.

The final three shows of the season will feature two in March, Doc Severinsen on March 2, and the return of the brass and percussion musical Blast! on March 9. The final show of the season is scheduled for May 11, 2012, with the visual spectacle Pop Goes the Rock by Cirque Dreams

Current season ticket holders have recently begun to purchase seats for the upcoming season (packages range from 6-11 shows), but it will not be until June 20 that potential season ticket holders will be able to take part in the milestone season of the performing arts complex. And the rest of the remaining tickets will go on sale on September 7.

For more information about these programs as well as other non-season shows, go to the Cheyenne Civic Center website here. You can also contact the performing arts complex at 510 W. 20th St., Cheyenne, Wyo. Phone (307) 637-6363.
