Chez Lola in Fort Greene Didn't Cut the Mustard on Its Last Inspection

You know, I almost always like when an American restaurant uses chez ( at the house of ) as part of its name. Chez Lola on Myrtle Avenue is no exception. I especially like the colors and design of the facade of the restaurant too. However, what I don't like is what they were gigged for during its last inspection by the city.

If you haven't heard already, the city found a couple of critical sanitary violations upon inspecting Chez Lola:

1. Cold food held above 41 degrees F. ( smoked fish above 38 degrees F. ) except during necessary preparation.
2. Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.
3. Sanitized equipment or utensil, including in-use food dispensing utensil, improperly used or stored.

Another couple of violations that the city didn't consider "Critical," but are bothersome to me and perhaps you too:

1. Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to vermin exist.
2. Plumbing not properly installed or maintained; sewage disposal system in disrepair or not functioning properly.

The plumbing violation has more to it, but I didn't include it. The final violations score was 35 for Chez Lola, which is a high "C" on the city's new but controversial letter-grade scale.

I don't know about you but even though "Chez" is in the name, I'm not inclined to eat at Chez Lola-at least until I know they've gotten rid of the rodent problem, and done so without getting pesticide all over the place too.

Dear T. H. Panley, we are Chez Lola and would love a second chance to be reviewed. The inspection you link to made us just as concerned as you.

The chef my biz partner and I looked at each other dumbfounded and saddened over this inspection - this really isn't us and we don't have a history of bad scores. Since that inspection, we have worked hard to fix all of the violations that were put in this report and have been waiting every day since late June for our new inspection, hoping to let our clientele know that this bad score is not who we are. Should these inspectors take any longer to come by I will personally invite you for a rendezvous inspection of our prep and cooking area, hair cover and gloves shall be provided.

    sincerely
