Chicago 2016 Olympics Choice for Equestrian Events is Tempel Farms

Christine Bude Nyholm
The City of Chicago is one of the cities being considered for the 2016 Olympics, an event that would bring an influx of people from around the world into Illinois. If Chicago wins the Olympic bid over Rio De Janiero, Tokyo and Madrid the economic impact upon the Chicago area will be huge.

There are several sporting events associated with the Olympics, including Equestrian Events that feature the skills of horses and riders. If Chicago is selected as the Olympic city, the Equestrian events will be held about 30 miles north of the City of Chicago, at Tempel Farms in Old Mill Creek, near Wadsworth and Gurnee.

Tempel Farms is famed for their herd of Lipizzaner horses, best known as the dancing white stallions that leap into the air and are trained for synchronized movement to music.

The Lipizzans are a rare breed of horse that was bred for the Royal Hapsburg family of Austria. During World War II. The noble breed was in danger of being demolished, but General Patton saved the Lipizzaner from extinction. The Walt Disney movie The Miracle of the White Stallions, 1963, was based upon the story of the rescue of the Lipizzaner during WWII.

During the summer months Tempel Farms holds performances so that spectators can see the horses at various stages of training. The property has a large section that will be used as the amphitheater to be built for the Olympics Equestrian events, if Chicago wins the Olympic bid.

The summer performances at Tempel Farms include Mares and Foals, Carriage Tradition, Young Stallions, All Steps and Movements of the Classical School, Pas de Trois, Work in Hand and Airs About the Ground and The Quadrille. The 90 minute performance has one ten minute break. Performances are on Wednesday and Sunday only during the summer months. See the Tempel Farms website for additional information.

If Chicago is chosen for the Olympic games, the entire region would be affected. The Equestrian events at Tempel Farms would bring spectators north the the city to Lake County, Illinois. The Gurnee area is already a popular destination in the Midwest with the Six Flags Great America amusement park and Gurnee Mills Outlet Mall offering discount shopping. The area would likely flourish if the Olympic events were brought to Chicago.

Been there many times! (I even wrote on this too.) Right now, there's a Chicago 2016 flag flying at the front gate.
