On defense, the Bears linebacking core is probably its strongest component. Pisa Tinoisamoa was signed to play alongside veterans Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs. Former Lions head coach Rod Marinelli was hired to be the Bears defensive line coach and despite leading the Lions to an 0-16 record last year, he should be an upgrade for the defensive line. Chicago hopes DL Tommie Harris can stay healthy this season and duplicate a season like he had back in 2006. The Bears biggest weakness is definitely its secondary. Nathan Vasher will return after missing half the season last year due to an injury. Charles Tillman will be the other cornerback and rookie D.J. Moore from Vanderbilt could see a lot of playing time and provide some depth. They do not have any big playmakers but did acquire S Josh Bullocks this off-season which may provide some help. Lovie Smith will be taking over Defensive Coordinator duties this season and that should also be an upgrade.
The Bears have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs this season in a rather weak NFC North with their only real competition coming from the Vikings. The arrival of Jay Cutler has vastly improved this offense and the only real big question mark for this team is the secondary and maybe the inexperienced wide receivers. If this team can stay healthy and some of the younger players can step up, I expect them to be in the race at the end of the season and possibly make a run in the playoffs.
