After only one season at Shattuck St. Mary's, Jonathan Toews headed off to the University of North Dakota to play for their hockey team. Going to a University is not usually the ordinary step that hockey players hoping to play in the NHL usually take. Most players play in a league in the CHL (Canadian Hockey League) in hopes of getting noticed by the NHL. Although he did not go the most common way, the University route obviously worked out well for Jonathan Toews. In 2006, Jonathan Toews was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks, 3rd overall. He was the Blackhawk's first round pick. Despite being drafted in 2006, Jonathan Toews remained at the University of North Dakota for the 2006-2007 hockey season. During his time with the hockey team at the University of North Dakota, he was the NCAA West Regional Most Valuable Player in 2006. In 2007, Jonathan Toews was named to the World Junior All-Star Team.
After the 2006-2007 season with the University of North Dakota, Jonathan Toews went to play for the team that drafted him, the Chicago Blackhawks to play the 2007-2008 season. After his rookie season with the Chicago Blackhawks, Jonathan Toews was named Captain of the team. Jonathan Toews only played sixty-four games with the Chicago Blackhawks, but he managed to score fifty-four points. The next season (2008-2009), Jonathan Toews played all eighty-two regular season games with the Chicago Blackhawks and finished the season with sixty-nine points.
In 2005, Jonathan Toews was the captain of team Canada West in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, in which his team won the gold medal. During this international event, Toews scored the game winning goal of the tournament and was named MVP of the tournament. In 2006, Jonathan Toews played in the World Junior Championships, and was the youngest player on the team. Team Canada took home the gold medal. In 2007, he again played with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships, in which the team took home the gold for the second year in a row. Also in 2007, Jonathan Toews played in the World Championships and Team Canada once again took home the gold. In 2008, Toews was again part of Team Canada as they competed in the World Championships, this time winning the silver.
