We would all love to see less gun violence. Whether it's gangs shootouts or just hot-headed young adults out to make a point, less of it would be wonderful. Gun ordinances however, target the wrong people.
While strict gun rules like the ones Mayor Daley is proposing will help keep some guns off the street and prevent some people from shooting others willy-nilly, it does not focus on the portion of the population that is actually responsible for the majority of gun crimes. Instead, it places a choke chain on those innocents who wouldn't even consider trying to chew through the leash in the first place!
Responsible, law-abiding and authority-fearing people are going to be the ones most affected by ordinances. They will be afraid to even have their guns out in the open within their own home. They will put their guns away somewhere where they won't be noticed easily. They are not the ones we should worry about.
Gangs and criminals do not worry about gun ordinances because they are already participating in illegal activities. They do not have respect for authority or law enforcement. They are the ones we should worry about, but passing gun rules is not how you target them!
Young people who feel that guns are the answer to their problems are not going to worry about gun ordinances either. If they have it set in their mind that what they need to do involves using a gun, they will acquire a gun in whatever means possible and go through with their plans. Gun ordinances only stops the young people who respect authority and fear punishment or consequences. The ones who end up shooting other people usually do not have this respect or fear. Targeting the parents of these children might stop a few others, but in the city, there are other ways of getting guns besides grabbing your mom or dad's weapon.
It may look good politically to be answering the call of the people who are shouting for an end to gun violence, but it is the wrong answer. The emotional masses who ask for gun bans or rules are thinking with their injured hearts. Logically, gun bans or ordinances are not going to stop the gun violence.

Post a CommentGreat written.
Criminals have no problem getting drugs, switchblades and or guns if the price is right.
Bans only stop honest people from defending themselves!
I hate guns, so I'd love to see 'em leave society, but you're right in saying things are a bit more complex. We have an increasing gun problem in the UK, and criminals seem to be able to get hold of guns disturbingly easily.
Stopping by to say hi :o) Great article!
You are so right. Good job
Great job Tink.
Let's outlaw guns! We've already outlawed crime and that didn't work so let's outlaw guns! Next we can outlaw gravity! Maybe, on the positive side, if our brilliant educators could be persuaded that moral principles are not an unwarranted intrusion into education that would actually help.
Your absolutely right!
Thanks for sharing. How many people want to move to Chicago now? Ha!
How right you are!
