The 33rd Chicago Marathon is open to everyone. Although you have your running stars, such as last year's winners Liliya Shobukhova and Sammy Wanjiru, and also Joan Benoit Samuelson, those participating in the most popular running event in Chicago become stars for the day as miles upon miles of people stand on the sidelines, cheering, clapping, waving signs and encouraging you on. At least 45,000 people are expected to run. Winners of the Chicago Marathon each will receive $75,000.
But this year is expected to be hot, in the 80's, which is not an ideal weather condition for a marathon. At least five people have died running the Chicago Marathon and in 2007, 315 runners were hospitalized for heat stroke. This year, a new emergency alert system has been put in place, with color coding, to announce the conditions of the race. For example, green is for good conditions, but black means the race is canceled.
However, despite the emergency alert system, you need to be prepared. You should not run a marathon if you have not trained properly, and fluids are especially important in warm weather running. Know what to look for when it comes to heat exhaustion and heat stroke and have enough sense to stop running if you know you should.
Registration for the Chicago Marathon 2010 is closed. It is highly recommend that if you want to run in the 2011 Chicago Marathon that you register early. Your best bet is to watch the website and pay attention to when registration opens for 2011. In the meantime, practice for next year's marathon by following a proven guide, such as the marathon training guide designed by professional runner Hal Higdon.
