The second of two articles on this topic caught my interest. Apparently, it is a huge deal that this Chicago Icon would be closed for any but the most normal of reasons.

According to the Chicago Tribune article, the Museum closed it's doors starting January 9th, 2008 and will reopen on Saturday, January 12th, 2008. The reason for the closing centers around the dismantling of temporary exhibits like "Star Wars" and "Christmas Around the World", in order to make way for several new ones.

Some of the newest exhibits will cover fascinating topics such as the science associated with Cinema and Television. There will even be a talk show for visitors to share thoughts and comments about their favorite stars.

The most interesting exhibit to make it's way into the Museum will be called "Smart Home: Green+Wired," which is going to be a fully functional, environmentally friendly, 3-story home. It will be located on the East Side of the Museum, outside.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, This 2-Bedroom, 2-Bath home will feature a system that redirects filtered sink water into the toilets. The house will also have cement siding, landscaping chips that are made of peach pits, and all floor tiles are being created with crushed and polished ceramic retrieved from landfills. The weirdest part will be the green roof that is insulated with vegetation? Talk about your "Green Houses". This exhibit is scheduled to open on May 8th, 2008 as a $10, extra fee exhibit and will close in January 2009.

Also coming in 2008 will be the following exhibits as explained on the Museum's website:

Earth from Space

July 19 - September 14, 2008

Earth from Space features 41 large-scale photographs that present views of the planet few have witnessed with their own eyes: the swirling arms of a massive hurricane, the triangular shadows cast by the Great Pyramids, the bend of a Venetian canal, and many more. This exhibit is a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The exhibition has been made possible by Global Imagination.

Cabaret Mechanical Theatre

October 1, 2008 - March 2, 2009

Cabaret Mechanical Theatre is an exhibition containing 20 unique, amusing mechanical sculptures that combine science and art. The sculptures, called automata, are brought to life by tiny cranks, pulleys and gears.

And don't forget to check out the familiar and ever popular exhibits that have become permanent fixtures at the Museum. My personal favorite is the Fairy Castle.

And the best part? Beginning Saturday, January 12th, 2009 thru January 31st, 2009, General Admission to the Museum is FREE! Now would be a good time to go for a visit!

We hope you'll enjoy your visit!

Excellent info! I love the "green" home idea! It would be really fun to see what a green home looks like.
