The Associated Press is reporting that one of the largest divorce settlements ever has happened in Chicago, Illinois. Also according to the Associated Press Gaetano Ferro of American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers agrees and says that he is not "aware of a bigger award in the United States."

After sighting irreconcilable differences in 2003 Maya Polsky filed for divorce from Michael Polsky who is an energy magnate says the Associated Press. In October of 2006 a Chicago Judge William Boyd said that Mrs. Polsky was entitled to at least half of the couples assets, states the Associated Press. According to the Associated Press the estimated worth of combined assets and cash would have left Mrs. Polsky getting at least $176 million dollars from the divorce.

The Associated Press is reporting that after learning of omitted assets that Judge William Boyd altered his ruling in favor of Mrs. Polsky to the tune of $184 million instead of the $176 million that he had awarded before hand.

The Associated Press says that Maya Polsky was a 55 year old homemaker and the owner of art gallery. The Associated Press quotes Maya Polsky's lawyer Howard Rosenfeld as saying "...more than $170 million of the award is nontaxable cash." He also states according to the Associated Press "...in researching the case he could find nothing in which a homemaker wife received such a significant award." When asked by the Associated Press about his clients feelings on the ruling Mr. Rosenfeld says "She's very much satisfied with the court's decision. She thinks she was fairly treated by the court."

According to court records obtained by the Associated Press the couple had married in the Ukraine in 1975 and came to the United States in 1976 with "only four suitcases and $500 in cash." The Associated Press continues with the couple moved to Chicago in 1980 where Mr. Polsky became successful in the energy business.

According to the Associated Press report Mr. Polsky was the brains behind Northbrook-based SkyGen Energy which sold in 2000 for an estimated $450 million. He is currently the President and CEO of Invenergy Wind LLC in Chicago, Illinois. The report did not cover what ventures Maya Polsky is currently involved in.
