Chicago Weather More Predictable than Cubs, Padres Game

Cold, Rain Postponed Play

COMMENTARY | I may not always know what I'm talking about when it comes to sports, but I seem to do alright when it comes to talking about weather. I predicted the Cubs' game against the San Diego Padres scheduled for Tuesday night would be postponed -- and it was.

Carrie Muskat has posted an article at the MLB.com website titled "Weather postpones Cubs' games with Padres."

In a previous article, I mentioned how bad the weather was here in Peoria, Ill., which is just a couple hours south of Chicago. We had rain and sleet along with high winds. Chicago had the same thing. Their winds hit 30 mph at times coming off Lake Michigan. All in all, there was no choice but to postpone the game.

This leaves the two teams with a predicament. They will have to play a doubleheader. The reason is that San Diego is coming to Wrigley just this one time, and further they will have to leave after Wednesday due to scheduling.

The good news is that Wednesday offers a bit of a respite from extreme weather. At least there will be no rain and the temperatures are expected to reach into the 40s. Blistering, is it not?

Tickets will be sold for each game, as opposed to fans getting a "one-pricer."

Of course, that also means another pitcher for each team.

The pitching matchup for the first game is San Diego's Dustin Mosely (0-3, 1.83 ERA) against Chicago's Matt Garza (0-2, 6.27 ERA). Wednesday night, the Cubs' James Russell (1-1, 7.20 ERA) will go against Aaron Harang (3-0, 1.50 ERA).

Looking at the ERAs of the Padres pitchers, I think the Cubs could be in for a long day; let's think happy thoughts.

The Wednesday night game is the makeup game for Tuesday.

I wanted to pass on an interesting tidbit of information that Muskat reported. When the Cubs evened their record at 8-8, they recorded "even records at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8." Also, the Cubs didn't have a rainout all of last year.

I'm beginning to believe that 2011 is going to be a year with some magic.
