Chicago's Best German Restaurants

Chicago truly is a cultural melting pot, which means you can find any type of food you're craving, usually at any time of day. When those cold Chicago winters roll around, there is no better comfort food than German food, a hearty meal served up in a cozy pub. Here are my favorite spots for a sausage and a beer.

My all time favorite German restaurant in Chicago is Lacshet's Inn. It has a great pub atmosphere and serves up some amazing food. Vegetarians beware - this is one seriously meat based menu. The Goulash is to die for, and the Sauerbraten is the best I've had anywhere. The house salad with hot bacon dressing is absolutely superb and the best part is they serve complimentary schnapps after dinner! Located at 2119 W Irving Park Road.

My next pick is Resi's Bierstube Restaurant and Tavern. The beer garden in the back is a great place to gather with friends on a summer night. They have a huge selection of German beers and traditional German fare. My favorite is the big soft pretzel basket. It's served with mustard and horseradish but is good enough to eat plain. Also, their potato pancakes are to die for! Located at 2034 W Irving Park Road.

Glunz Bavarian Haus is another one of Chicago's great German restaurants. The atmosphere is dark and cozy, and the food is great. My favorite item on their menu is the spinach and cheese spaetzle. The cinnamon duck is also worthy of mention. The portion sizes are so large that you can count of having leftovers to enjoy the next day. Service can be on the slow side, so come ready to settle in and relax. Located at 4128 N Lincoln Ave.

The Chicago Brauhaus is a great place to stop for authentic German cuisine and atmosphere. Not only is the food wonderful, but you can often find a German polka band playing and see some authentic German dancing on the weekends. While the food tends to be on the pricier side, the larger portions make it worth the price. Weiner schnitzel and pork loin are two of my favorite items from their menu. Located at 4632 N Lincoln Ave.

Mirabelle Restaurant is a quaint and cozy German restaurant off the beaten path. While the restaurant draws an older crowd, there is still plenty of beer drinking going on. The food is authentic and tastes like you're in your German grandma's kitchen. Their wiener schnitzel is great, as is the schweinebraten. Located at 3454 W Addison St.
