Chick Flicks: Best Upcoming Romantic Comedies of 2010

Aida Ekberg
If you're a fan of "chick flicks", 2010 has a whole new slew of romantic comedies for you to choose from. This is a list of the good, the bad, and the ugly of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010, which include an ode to everyone's favorite romantic holiday and romantic comedies centered around turkey basters and bounty hunters. So be forewarned: the upcoming chick flicks of 2010 are a crazy, hormone-driven bunch of romantic comedies that put unrealistic expectations on men: according to our favorite chick flicks, we have to hate them, fall for them, not be able to be with them for some reason, then end things happily ever after, with a lot of wacky and horrible stuff happening in between (the premise of many of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010):

Leap Year - January 8, 2010 - I'm honestly not too big of a fan of romantic comedies, and even though this is one of the upcoming chick flicks of 2010 with that tried-and-true storyline about a girl being torn between two guys, the one she's been obsessing over and the new one who might really be what she wants, Amy Adams is in this movie, so that might make it a little more watchable. It's about a gal who just can't get her guy to propose to her (when she thinks he's finally going to do it, he gives her a pair of diamond earrings instead of a ring...ha ha), so she decides to do the job herself, relying on an Irish tradition that allows women to propose to men on February 29th. But while trying to follow her boyfriend to Dublin, she experiences a multitude of problems. So enter guy # 2, a handsome stranger that apparently can just drop whatever he's doing to help her get to her original guy. So it's one of the many upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 with a realistic storyline, and one of the chick flicks guys might not mind being drug to (but not because he loves you; Amy Adams is in it!).

When in Rome - January 29, 2010 - And here's another of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 featuring an actress that guys might not mind having an excuse to go see: Kristen Bell. However, this is one of the kind of chick flicks I hate most: those with some sort of wacky voodoo magic involved. This one is about a girl that takes a trip to Rome, where she plucks a few coins from the fountain of love that she predictably scoffed at. However, it turns out there really was something to the fountain of love, as an odd group of suitors start to relentlessly pursue her. But when a guy she falls for starts to act the same way, how will she know if it's the real deal or just the result of her pilfering those magic pennies? Well, at least it's one of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 that tried with the storyline, but it still seems to me I've seen a few chick flicks that have done this "magic love vs. real love" thing before.

Valentine's Day - February 12, 2010 - This is one of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 that you probably will not get around to taking your girlfriend to, seeing as how it is about a girl's favorite day of the year and will be released so close to it. Plus you've got a long list of about half of Hollywood starring in it (plenty of stars from past chick flicks included), with the likes of Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Garner, Patrick Dempsey, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, and many more actors and actresses that don't mind sharing the spotlight to celebrate one of American's favorite holidays. But take heart, guys; it's one of the best upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 if you've got a short attention span, as it focuses on lots of short stories instead of one long one, and then you've got the two Jessicas to keep you awake.

The Back Up Plan - March 16, 2010 - You didn't think I could do a list of upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 without a few chick flicks involving birth and babies after the success of 'Knocked Up', did you? This one stars Jennifer Lopez as a woman who actually wants to get pregnant, however. She's given up on dating and finding the right guy to start a family with, so she knocks herself up via artificial insemination. Of course she meets the guy of her dreams right afterwards; tries to hide her pregnancy from him; and then drags him into the world of modern motherhood prep along with her, complete with birthing in wading pools and pregnancy sex. It's another of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 that tries, but I'm sure we all know how this one is going to end.

The Bounty Hunter - March 19, 2010 - And here's one of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 starring Jennifer Aniston (whose characters in chick flicks always have a strikingly similar personality to Rachel from 'Friends'). Gerard Butler plays her ex-husband here, a bounty hunter who is hired to track down...guess who? His ex-wife who has skipped bail, played by none other than Jennifer Aniston. It's one of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 that you can see the end of from here in 2009, so hopefully you just enjoy the long ride involving the two exes handcuffed together.

Date Night - April 9, 2010 - This looks like it could be one of the better upcoming comedies of 2010, starring Steve Carrel and Tina Fey as a married couple whose boring life takes a turn for the exciting through a case of mistaken identity (they take another couple's reservation at a restaurant, and then are pursued by thugs who think they are that couple). It looks a little action-heavy for the comedic duo and the trailer was a little disappointing, but I see this movie as one of my only hopes when it comes to the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 that I might actually really enjoy watching and not groan the whole way through.

Knight & Day - July 2, 2010 - And here's another of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 infused with action. It honestly looks like a 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' remake to me, with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz starring as a fugitive couple living a glamorous but dangerous lifestyle where each is unsure if they can trust the other. It's not one of the upcoming comedies of 2010 that I'd get too excited about, but it's looking like one of the only chick flicks of the summer, and one of your last chances for a little humorous romance before the few fall and winter offerings.

The Baster - August 20, 2010 - But you won't have to wait too long for another of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 that I'm not really looking forward to all that much, and a future Razzie winner. Jennifer Aniston plays a gal that wants to get pregnant through artificial insemination, which I'm guessing she plans to do the ol' fashioned way. But for some reason her neurotic guy pal replaces the donor's semen with his own, having to live with the secret that he is her real baby daddy. So I'm guessing the romance will come from her falling for her baby's real father? I'm not really sure, but if you're looking for romantic comedies to make you laugh, this one might do the trick (albeit for the wrong reasons).

Going the Distance October 8, 2010 - And it just wouldn't be a list of upcoming romantic comedies without a Drew Barrymore movie! In this one she plays a girl trying to make a long distance relationship work and all the quirky problems that comes along with it. So when she and her man score their dream jobs on opposite sides of the country, can they make their relationship work? Skype away, young lovers, until this movie ends with one of you giving in and moving in with the other (and are able to perform your job on the other side of the country over the internet). This is one of the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 that looks like it will be trying to appeal to the modern crowd by focusing on all the modern ways we keep in touch with each other, and as sad as it seems, it will probably be a big hit.

How Do You Know? (or Untitled James L. Brooks Project) - December 17, 2010 - This is one of the few upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 that has a chance at being really good, although all I know about it is it's directed by James L. Brooks, stars Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd, and Jack Nicholson, and is about a love-triangle involving a white-collar executive and a pro baseball pitcher competing for the heart of he same woman. So can we at least get 'As Good As It Gets' again? I don't know, but as one of the only hopes I've got for upcoming good romantic comedies of 2010, I would love to see James L. Brooks bring his A-game for this love game.

Did I bash the upcoming chick flicks of 2010 here a little bit? Yes, but these are your only choices, sadly. So from love triangles to basters and bounty hunters, the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010 are an eclectic bunch of seemingly predictable chick flicks with laughable storylines, but hopefully you'll get a few good laughs from these upcoming romantic comedies for the right reasons.
