A Paleo diet meal is based on the natural foods that the caveman ate during the Paleolithic Era. This was the period of time from 10,000 years ago to 2 million years ago. The caveman was a hunter and gather with no agricultural skills. The caveman ate foods that his environment furnished him with.
A typical Paleo diet meal for the caveman was meat and proteins like pork, beef and fish. Vegetables like broccoli, carrots and sweet potatoes, Desserts and snack like citrus, strawberries and many other wild berries.
The caveman's Paleo diet meal was well balanced mix of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The Paleo diet is now popular because anthropologists believe that the caveman was physically fit, had a strong immune system and was free from the chronic disease we see today.
Diseases like colon cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease were rare for the caveman, this during a time of no medical knowledge. The caveman was healthy because the Paleo diet meal they would eat was a diet built on a balance of natural foods.
Let's take a look at an example of a common Paleo diet meal. Here we have chicken and egg salad with almond satay sauce.
Salad
2 eggs, boiled, cut into quarters
1 chicken breast, steamed and shredded
2 cups rocket leaves
1 carrot, diced
½ green capsicum, diced
Almond sauce
1 small white onion, grated
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1tbs oil
¼ cup almond butter
¼ cup coconut cream
1tbs soy sauce (optional)
Chilli flakes
Instructions
To make the almond sauce, place the oil into a fry pan. Fry onion and garlic on low heat for 5 minutes or until slightly browned. Add almond butter, coconut cream and soy sauce, stir constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in a desired amount of chilli flakes. Leave to cool slightly and remove excess oil. Place chicken, rocket, carrot and capsicum in a mixing bowl and combine well.
To serve, place salad on a plate with egg quarters and spoon almond sauce on top.
