Chicken Pox Travel

Twins and Chicken Pox

Michelle Franklin

This is not a typical travel horror story. There are no complaints about the airline industry, a hotel, or a restaurant. Instead, this is a story about the horrors of traveling most of the way across the country with year-old twins.

Picture this...you're moving from Wyoming to Virginia. You have twins who are only a year old. You have a dog. You're driving!

The day before you leave one of the twins develops a fever. Ok, no problem, kids get sick. Maybe he's cutting a tooth. Wait...what are those red spots? Uh oh, it's time for a trip to the pediatrician. It's an interesting reaction walking into a pediatrician's office with your baby boy and finding yourself ushered into an empty exam room before you even sign in. Apparently red spots scare all the other parents!

And yes, it's the chicken pox. So in less than 24 hours, you're driving across the country with two babies, one of whom has the chicken pox. By the way, neither Mom nor Dad has ever had the chicken pox. So now you're picturing getting to Virginia with the entire family covered in spots and possibly even the dog.

So the travel horror...trying to keep a feverish, miserable baby somewhat happy. Praying the other baby doesn't start getting spotty. Realizing as Mom, you have no choice but to take care of this itchy, spotty baby despite the risks of adult chicken pox. Rather than a leisurely three day drive with plenty of breaks, the move is accomplished in 26 hours. And believe it or not, nobody else developed spots!
