Chickenfoot? What Were They Thinking?

Will They Be the Next Mega-Superstars?

Beth Inman
Four of rock and roll fan's favorites musicians have gotten together and formed a new group.. That's right...Chickenfoot. Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar, Van Halen superstars, have formed a new group with guitarist, Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Pepper's drummer, Chad Smith both superstar musicians as well.

First, it was Mark and Sammy at Sammy's club down in Mexico, and then Chad Smith joined them for a sit down. The three really clicked and became good friends. Good friends that made good music together. Sounds sappy, doesn't it? Yeah, well they were good together. They had such a good time; they decided to stay together and asked Joe Satriani to join them. He did, and as they say, the rest will be history. Their first album released in June has already hit the top five on both the Pop and Independent Music Charts, selling over 180,000 in just the first three weeks.

So why Chickenfoot? Apparently it began as a joke. It isn't really the kind of name everyone will like. It is kind of a weird name, a name that evokes a really weird picture, but it is one you will be able to remember. It actually makes me think of Prison Break! Was it just a good joke gone lucky or brilliant marketing? Not sure, but I think I will have to get used to it before I can walk around in a tee shirt with a chicken foot on it. Besides, I heard Joe was once in a group called the Squares...Chickenfoot ain't so bad I guess. It has got a little more stick-to-it than the Squares.

On the just a little more serious side, these guys really are good. As band members of other groups that have soared to stardom, I can only imagine the sound that will result as a combination of their talents. On tour in Europe after a small series in the United States, they will return to the US in September. They are not playing songs from their old groups, they are bring on the Chickenfoot; playing their own stuff. They do plan on working together and heading out on tours around the US, but one of the members does still have other commitments. That's right, Chad Smith has no plans to leave the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and for that I am glad. I love the Chili Peppers, but that is another article! Chad does plan to remain with the Chili Peppers and work his schedule around the two bands.

Sammy Hagar is a rock chameleon - he can go anywhere and fit in. Great article Beth.
