Child Erotica Vs Child Pornography Online

Is There a Difference?

Candida Bohnne-Eittreim
I watched a program the other night called Online Nightmare. What I saw was enough to give any responsible parent the willies. While much of the program initially dealt with phishing and other scams, the main part of this well crafted documentary focussed on the issue of pornography and children. And it was here that I became increasingly angry over the hosts assertion that online pornography was not the same as child erotica. A 7 year old girl wearing nothing but a bra and thong is evidently not considered anything but erotica, yet who is watching this child? Not your local saint I can assure you. Predators who hunger and crave the sight of a tiny body are watching these children.

Call me old fashioned or crazy, but I find it very difficult to seperate any use of children with erotica from porn. Yet according to one of the narrators, the law has a clearly defined seperation between the two. First implicit in child erotica, at least in my mind, is the victimization of the innocent we all scream to have protected. Where are their parents? Who's photographing little ones ranging in age from helpless infants to teens? Grandma, grandpa, uncles, aunties, or older cousins, brothers or sisters? Someone is, and as parents it behooves us to try and find out what our children are being exposed to. Do you find the image of a thonged baby or bottomless 7 year old enchanting? I don't.

But because of the phenomen of internet sex addiction, many otherwise "normally" functioning adults find themselves increasingly drawn in to deeper more objectionable sexual desires. The first thrills of watching adult online porn palls after awhile, and the addict increasingly craves newer fresher thrills. And far too often this leads to venturing down some very dark places in the human psyche, in a effort to quell the insatiable craving to get off and obtain release.

When masturbating multiple times a day loses its appeal, the sexually jaded addict then has to scale new heights to gain the same huge sexual surge. Bestiality, offline infidelity and child porn are all there to take the addict to the next level. Those soft tender pink bodies become irresistable, and then.. somewhere a REAL child becomes a statistic and makes the 6 o'clock news. Because these sick individuals often cannot be content with simply viewing these tiny children. Fantasy for them must become a reality, and soon they're trolling chat rooms looking for live "meat" And that could be YOUR child being targetted.

Think it can't happen? During the show, a young 7 year old girl ran to her next door neighbor to check e-mail. The observant woman noticed an adult male asking the child to watch him. He removed his jeans and exposed himself masturbating actively right online. Fortunately the woman had sent the child off, and continued as if she were the little girl. When done, he requested they meet, assuring the "girl", he had tinted windows so no one could "see" what they were doing. The woman arranged the meet at a local strip mall, and set up a sting. He was quickly arrested and the 7 year old spared rape or worse.

Others are not so lucky. Many die or suffer serious injuries including burns and wounds that will never heal. Given all this, you tell me what you think about child erotica and should it be allowed-legally or otherwise?

The last thing I have to say is this: I don't care what IMAGES a person possesses, they're tantamount to thought and thought alone. Child porn (though not pictures) existed when our founding fathers said "Congress shall make NO LAW". Because even abhorrent, reprehensible speech is just speech. Thoughts don't hurt people. And for the 50% who decide to harm a child, there are plenty of laws on the books to deal with that scum. What the current state of affairs is technically, accurately described as an authoritarian policy to protect children. While I agree that is a fine value, understand that it's not a democratic value. We are grouping people who followed the law because there's a good damn chance (50%) that they are predators of some kind. While that creates security, we must understand that that security comes at the expensive of our democratic values (namely, the power of the 1st amendment). Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither, it has been said.

By the way, the statistics are hard to come by. Based on arrest records, 30% of people who are CONVICTED of sexual exploitation of a child (possession of child porn) have had some kind of inappropriate contact with a child. This figure is surely low. On the other end, the federal bureau of prisons conducted a voluntary program of those convicted of this crime who felt that they needed help. According to this study (which they withdrew from consideration for an academically peer reviewed journal) showed 80% have had inappropriate contact with a child. That figure is surely high. So the truth is somewhere in the middle, around 50%. That's how I came to that statistic.

You all sound like exaggerators and liars to me. Put pressure on the judicial system? Are you kidding me? Half of the people who are being considered by your moral majority busy bodies followed the law and downloaded filth (yes, filth) that they thought were legal. Statistics show that 50% have had CONTACT with children and the other half HAVEN'T. There were over 5 million of these type of images by the end of the 1990s. There were 300,000 such images by the end of the 1970 on film (that were later scanned into digital). There's no NEED to photograph a single additional child. What's done is done. And to classify a person who committed a perverted act but never harmed a child as a "violent sex offender again children" (often for the rest of their lives is immoral.

continued.... can be perverted into rape (both homosexual and heterosexual) and exploitation of children and violence too. I do think it existed long before the internet, but the internet exploits it and makes it easier for the predator to find prey. I just saw a show the other night about the fascination with death and violent pictures, like car crashes and we sat dumbfounded that people would not only want to view that, but would actually pay money to see it. And the parents of the victims of one such case couldn't even get their mutilated daughter's picture off the web.

i would not want to be a child growing up in the internet age. I just wouldn't.

Child porn is a disease that must be eradicated, and those who deal with it should be put behind bars for the rest of lives.

This is a very insightful article. I found your article in the "you may also like" after reading E.L. Morin's article on Internet Porn and the Child. She says, the "crime is so new that there is no support in place for victims and families of victims." I can't comprehend the draw to such a sick activity. What "clicks" in a brain that even makes the body of a youngster erotic???

  • Candida Bohnne-Eittreim3/25/2007

By the way, my understanding of the law is that it is illegal to have a minor child in any proximity to sexual material. What I believe is this is a very sneaky underhanded way of trying to legitimize child porn. Call it art-erotica and then you can claim artistic license. That's pure BS. It's all one and the same-child porn.

  • Candida Bohnne-Eittreim3/25/2007

Melissa, it sickens me too. And if parents only knew what their children are into online, I think they'd faint. I cannot find the words to justify such parental ignorance of reality. It makes me wonder if they secretly know, and by NOT addressing it, are hoping it will somehow magically disappear? As to the teacher/student sex scandals: I wonder what the administrators of the school were thinking as they observed a sexally dressed teacher in their midst????

  • Candida Bohnne-Eittreim3/25/2007

Dana, to clarify: I'm sayinmg that sex can become an addiction that leads someone who has never felt the need to go further than societal "norms" Into areas like child porn, because they've become jaded. In fact, during the segment, a man who never had any desire for infidelity or other activities went offline with it due to "jading". His own term for what happens when multiple masturbatory sessions a day stopped filling his needs.
