Child of My Heart

(For Erik)

L. Lee Scott
Child of my heart
Though not of my body,
When I first held you close
I knew the treasure I'd found.

You wide blue eyes gazed into mine,
So young to hold your old soul;
You grasped my finger, held so tight
That you held my heart as well.

I missed your first true smile
And tentative first steps;
Photos and flying visits
Became my cherished memories.

Watching you grow from a distance
Still I felt you near me
Held always in my heart,
Forever my own precious boy.

Childhood doesn't last forever;
My baby's now a grown man,
With your own life, your own love,
Making plans and building dreams.

My heart swells when I hear your voice,
My soul rejoices when I see your face.
Dearest, your fluffy bunny is long gone,
But you'll always hold my heart.

    This is touching and true. You can love a child more than his birth mother, even.

    That is beautiful and a tearjerker. I too felt that way about my grandsons and granddaughters and my own children as well.

    I got tearful reading this one. I have a child of my heart, too, not homemade but home grown :)
