Child Molester to Get 60 Days in Jail

Criminals Get Help, Children Suffer

Everyday millions of people who commit non dangerous crimes are imprisoned. How is it that a 34 year old man who confesses to raping a 6 year old gets off with 60 days in jail? Judge Cashman of Burlington , Vt. Backs his sentence with the simple excuse of "the lighter sentence was the only way to make sure Hulett got prompt treatment". If this is how we justify the unusually light punishment for a sexual offender, why are drug users put into jail everyday, rather than being sent to rehabilitation? This, in my opinion, is a sorry excuse for unjustifiably light punishment.

Cashman recently reissued the sentence to 3 years and later after prison Hulett would be entered into a probation program. This form of punishment does not discourage future sex offenders from violating other children. They now know they live in a country of weak punishment and ill excuses. They may think what they're doing is okay. They make think it a medical problem. When in reality, these are just sick minded, pathetic people. These people rapechildren. These types of crimes deserve capital punishment & until we enforce the punishment millions of innocent children will be violated and scarred for the rest of their lives. These children don't deserve this treatment. Why should the people who put it upon them get off so easy?

In this case, the Judge Cashman may very well be on his own. Republican Gov. James Douglas even went as far as to suggest Cashman's to resignment. There has even been talk of impeachment. What causes Cashman to give such light punishment? What is it that sways him toward the criminals side? According to an article on foxnews.com, a sensitivity towards sex offenders isn't his only faulty prejudice- "Cashman's early years as a judge were marked by complaints that he was insensitive to the concerns of female victims of abuse and that he unfairly favored fathers in custody cases. But those concerns seemed to have vanished by 2001 when Cashman won a new six-year term by a legislative vote of 135-15."

Is it fair to the women of our country to have a sexist judge ruling a part of our judiciary system? Or to the young children who go undefended when violated by an adult? This is a country of harsh punishment where criminals are to be charged in regard to their crimes. Obviously, this is not the case to Judge Cashman. A Caledonian Record newspaper reporter wrote, "As far as we're concerned, Cashman's district can hereby be considered a predator's sanctuary. As long as judges like Ed Cashman are allowed to sit on Vermont benches, children cannot be considered safe."
