Child Murder: Prominent Doctor Under Investigation for Murder of His Son: The Real Tragedy

9-Year-Old Child Murder Tragedy

The child murder of 9-year-old Tommy Wolf ended with the arrest of his father, 51 year old Dr. Stephen Wolf, a prominent physician. Police were called to the Nichols Hills home in Oklahoma City Monday morning about 4:00 AM. At that time, Tommy was alive but died at the scene.

Father UnderChild Murder Investigation

The child murder prompted the arrest of his father whom police disarmed and took into custody. According to CNN, a knife was found at the home. According to a police affidavit, police arrived on the scene and entered the home of 51-year-old Dr. Stephen Wolf. His wife Mary, was saying "he's killing my son" as officers entered the home.

The affidavit states officers entered the kitchen of the home with weapons drawn and saw Dr. Wolf down on the ground near the dishwasher wrestling with something. Dr. Wolf was repeatedly saying, "He's got the devil in him and you know it," according to the affidavit.

Officers ordered Dr. Wolf to get down on his stomach. Officers then noticed a knife in the boy's head and one in his stomach. Dr. Wolf stated he's not dead and grabbed a knife. Police officers intervened. His wife, Mary, was taken to INTEGRIS Baptist Hospital and treated for defensive non-threatening wounds to her hands and mouth.

In order to get a license in Oklahoma, Wolf explained to the Medical Board in 1991, "I was hospitalized for major depression at St. Anthony's Hospital." He again was hospitalized in 1996 where he was hospitalized for three days blaming stress for his depression.

Neighbors and patients of Dr. Wolf who were interviewed, are stunned. Dr. Wolf was often seen playing tennis, catch and cub scouts with his 3rd grade son.

On one 911 call, a woman's voice is pleading for help and saying her son is dead. A man's voice is heard saying, "Get your f...ing hands behind your back. Later during the call, the man's voice is heard saying, "Mary is the devil."

In light of the recent Fort Hood tragedy, three things are becoming obvious.

1) The public needs education on what to be aware of when dealing with others. Obviously, Major Nidal Malik Hasan and Dr. Wolfe had work associates or family who might have noticed something.

2) We need to know what actions to take if concerned about an individual. Who do we go to when we have concerns?

3) Knowledge of depression and how to recognize it in ourselves and others

Mental Health Classes

Mental health classes could be required courses in schools. Plenty of testing is already available and students could be required to take testing so predetermined classes would be required. Many work organizations use personality tests to help determine prospective employees and the success of online dating improved greatly with additional personality testing.

The tragedy is we have the tools and knowledge to screen for these disorders. All it would take is implementing this knowledge into our school systems to help prevent further tragedies such as child murder.

Sad. This is occuring all too often around the US. Whatever it takes to prevent children and women from domestic violence and murder needs to be done. It is not fair to have people walking around the streets who flip out like that. God bless.

Very true Thomas...but the point is both guys are mentally ill. If we incorporated mental health into our education system, just maybe we can get some of this type thing straightened out. It's worth a try.

Of course, the death of any child is a tragedy, but there is a huge difference between the civilian doctor's neighbors and Major Malik's supervisors. The latter had a clear duty to act on the major's odd behavior and they failed to do so, costing several people their lives. Those military authorities bear a far greater responsibility for their negligence and should be fired.

Great coverage and information for those dealing with mental illness and depression. It is so sad that that little boy and those at Fort Hood had to die at the hands of people who were mentally ill.
