Child Safety - Tips on How to Keep Your Child Safe in the Home

Sarah
If you have little children at home then you know how important it is to keep them safe. There are a lot of hazards in the home and it isn't always easy to keep a constant eye on our kids. Even though we are parents it doesn't mean that we don't have other things to do such as cleaning, cooking, sewing, etc... You may be wondering how to keep your child safe from all the dangers that are just lurking around your home. In this article I will tell you how to childproof to help with some of the worry and headaches that they may be causing you. After all we don't have x-ray vision and we cant always be supermom.

First of all I want to tell you about fire hazards. It is very important that you not let your child have access to any open electrical outlet. Little children are curious and will try to put things like car keys in them. The child will get shocked and chances are they wont survive. You'll need to buy plastic covers to put inside the extra outlets to keep this from happening. If you have to have extension cords be sure there the childproof type. If they aren't you can always put plastic covers in the outlets of the cord too. If any electrical outlet or plug in your home has black burnt marks do not use the plug or outlet. You will need to buy a new cord for the appliance or replace it. The outlet should be replaced by a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to remove or replace it yourself.

Now lets start with the rest of your home. If you have blinds in any area you'll need to tack the cords up where the child cant reach. Your child can wrap the cord around it's neck and strangle himself. You'll need to put child safety latches on your refrigerator and stove. They also have them for the toilet to keep babies from playing in it. The drawers will need to have a latch also to keep the child from accessing knives and forks. The cabinets will need to have locks on them to keep the child away from poisons such as bug spray, cleaning supplies, soap, and etc... Make sure these objects are put up in the locked cabinets or in a place where they cannot be reached. It's best to keep them locked up in case you have a child that can climb. If you do not have smoke detectors in your home you'll need to purchase one for every room. Also a carbon monoxide detector. Make sure you buy fire extinguishers to put in the kitchen area.

Most importantly do not ever place anything over a child's crib. If you feel your child will climb/fall out put them in bed with you. If that is not an option there is a safety netted tent that you can purchase to keep the child from falling. It's called a Cozy Crib Tent. It can also help prevent your child from getting caught in-between rails. It is never OK to place any other object over the crib. If you cant find the product at any stores you can purchase it on line at www.securebaby.com. All other childproofing products can be found at stores such as wal-mart or target.
