Child Stomach Pain & Role of Early Healthy Eating Habits in Children

Pediatric Pain Implications

Christine Cadena
Children experience a variety of pain issues and often these are related to acute events that lead to pediatric pain. If your child is living with a gastrointestinal complication, it is quite common to find that child stomach pain as a common health concern in your home. As a parent, it is important to identify what is causing this pain and how it can be easily resolved.

Child stomach pain can be relatively simple to treat especially if related to a virus or some other type of acute infection. When suffering from child stomach pain, the infection can be treated by use of anti-viral mediations or antibiotics and often the pediatric pain is alleviated within a few days. For some children, however, the development of stomach pain may be related to a far more advanced health complication.

When seeking out pediatric care for your child's stomach pains, it is important to inquire about earl-onset of chronic conditions including gastric reflux, Crohn's disease and even diverticulitis. While these are typically conditions affecting the older population, there are more and more cases of young children developing these progressive and chronic diseases. With a few tests, your child's risk for these conditions can be ruled out, or confirmed.

If your child's stomach pain is associated with a progressive and chronic disease then a pediatrician nutritionist will need to be consulted as a way to help your child develop a life care plan for eating and obtaining quality nutrition. In addition, the nutritionist can assist your child in finding ways to alleviate the stomach pains by restricting certain foods that may trigger a pediatric pain reaction. Setting this foundation at a very young age will go a long way in helping your child to overcome the complications of stomach pain as an adult.

While not all children will easily transit into a healthy, or restrictive, eating style, as a parent, it is important to find a way to teach your child these eating habits at a young age especially when chronic disease is a health concern. By first identifying the presence of child stomach pain, and then obtaining a proper diagnosis of the underlying cause and origin, you can begin to lay out these healthy eating habits that will provide your child with a more healthy response to the condition they are facing for life.
