One of the best ways many pregnant women alleviate some of those questions and anxieties is by joining a Child birth class. The objective of a childbirth class is to inform, you about the changes in your body and assure you that the birthing process is natural and healthy. You will also be taught techniques that will relax and help you prepare for labor and birth. And educate you about your options so that you can make decisions that are best for you based on your beliefs and values.
Pregnant women can take classes at various places. They are offered at hospitals, birth centers, physicians or midwives offices, private homes, and community centers. Most hospitals in the UK and US offer classes for free or at a reduced cost for qualified individuals. The cost varies depending on what part of the country you live. Free may not necessarily be a bargain because of the information and training that you're given. Find out what kind of training and information you would be getting for free.
A large number of women because of their hectic lives choose at home learning via DVD and online classes. This is also the most cost effective approach.
Typically, a childbirth class has 8 weekly sessions consisting of lectures, discussions, and exercises. Classes are taught by a childbirth professional. And most are limited from 8-10 couples.
Whatever option you choose, there are certain things you should take into consideration.
What Is Their Philosophy?
It is important to choose a facility that fits your belief and values and desires for your birthing experience. If you prefer one-on-one session you would choose a facility that fulfills that need. Other things to consider would be class schedule and cost, natural birth or are you interested in exploring other options? Can you make your own choices? What method do they teach and does it fit in with what you want?
Your instructor should be approachable and open to answering your questions and address your concerns. You should be comfortable with your decisions.
Qualified Instructors
Your instructor should be certified in the method that he or she specializes. Ask for documentation. And verify that they are certified through a reputable childbirth Education Organization. You should have complete confidence that your educator is properly trained and that the information you're given is correct.
Your Time
The number one reason most women who do not take childbirth classes give is that they do not have time. There are many options available. Most places offer flexible schedules including weekends. Some offer private lessons in your home. Again, online classes are available.
The most important thing is to use the information and training that you're given and enjoy this time getting to bond and learn about your baby.
