Childproofing: Creating a Safe Haven for Your Kid

After a long busy day, we all want to relax and repose. For most of us our house serves as a retreat to do just that. People are different; so is every house from the one standing next to it. Being adults, we know our way around the house but what about the little child you're planning to bring home? Having a baby calls for extra attention and detailing. There are certain essentials without which no parent can do. These include baby cribs, prams, cradles, bassinets & moses baskets, changing tables, dressers & armoires, nursery storage, high and rocking chairs, adult gliders, ottomans and strollers. You may want to add to the list toy boxes, child size furniture, step stools, co-sleepers, tuffets and an air purifier. Installing these necessary and not-so necessary items in place is just one part of the job. The other more important part includes making your house childproof. Once your newborn grows into a toddler, which they do very fast, they'll have an unquenchable thirst for digging into every little nook and corner of the house. Apart from being an important developmental milestone, crawling infants are suggestive of the fact that it's time you made your house child safe. Children have little or absolutely no understanding of danger. Spelling trouble, this trait more often lead to children's injuries and fatalities. This makes "childproofing the house" task a top priority.

Obviously, parents have to be wise and watchful. One doesn't need to get paranoid about childproofing as it isn't an overwhelming task. Along with your own cognizance, certain procedures shall make your house a safe haven for your kid. You can put kitchen cabinets and drawer's contents off-limits by keep them locked. If you have fireplaces and wood stoves, then make them inaccessible for your baby by installing a fireplace gate or fence. Always anchor televisions with sturdy safety traps and keep recliners in the closed position when not in use. It is an intelligent idea to put your child in a highchair while cooking. Doing this shall save you a lot of running around. You can use edge cushions on countertops and islands and keep stools away from counters to discourage climbing. Children often like to put things in their mouth. So it is a better if you keep household cleaners, dish detergents, plastic bags, and refrigerator magnets out of reach. For your bathrooms, choose non-slip tub mats, shower mats, and area rugs. Bathroom essentials such as cleansers, bleach, toiletries, cosmetics, razors, hairdryers, curling irons, etc. are stocked away from the baby's vision and reach. Electrical and medical items should be secured safely. You should never trash old and unwanted medicines in a bin which is approachable for the kids.

No matter what you do, a child is bound to be curious and touch things around him/her. As it's a new world for the baby, he/she is only trying to get a better grasp of the surroundings. Putting a one floor-level cabinet for the child would satiate his/her inquisitiveness, say experts. You can fill this cabinet up with non-toxic items so that you baby can safely explore. Childproofing is a constant process and re-checking your home every six months is a given thing. It's best to fix new safeguards as your child grows stronger and smarter.
