Children with Gender Identity Disorder is on the Rise

Gender Identity Disorder is on the rise among children. Children now are coming out and talking about how they feel as they are trapped in the wrong body. How does this affect a child who feels this way and how can we approach this situation in a positive way. For a child as young as six years old to feel this way, it can put them into depression and make them withdraw from society. These children can have these feelings as young as six years old and up. Some parents who have children with Gender Identity Disorder disown their child. When a parent disowns their child due to the Gender Identity Disorder, this has a huge affect on the child. This is when the child goes into a deep depression and at times, some have committed suicide.

Some children who are born male and have the male parts actually feel female. These males actually have all the other characteristics of a female. The same goes for a child who is born a female. They have all the female parts but feel like a male on the inside and they also have all the characteristics of a male. Parents who have children who have Gender Identity Disorder need to approach this in a positive way and support their child. This is in no way the child's fault. This is a disorder in which you are born with.

If these children are supported and people would think more about the child's feeling, they may grow up and lead a normal life. Approaching this disorder in a negative way can have a huge affect on these children. This only puts more pressure on the child when they have enough to deal with already.

Although there is no cure for this disorder it can be treated to help the child cope with this disorder. The only way this may be treated is for the child to have surgery when they reach adult hood. Being an adult they can better feel out their situation and make the right decisions. When a child is going through this due to their young age, there isn't anything at this time that can be done for them. The only thing we can do is to not disown these children or neglect them all because it may embarrass their parents or others. The more support and understanding these children receive, the more they will be better able to accept themselves and live a happy life.

Barbara Walters aired a show on 20/20 called "My Secret Self". Barbara Walters interviewed parents and their children who have Gender Identity Disorder. One little boy Barbara interviewed dressed like a girl because that is how he felt. The parents of this child allowed him to dress like a girl because that is what made him feel comfortable. Another little boy told his parents God made a mistake, when his mom ask him what he was saying the little boy relied, I am a boy and I should be a girl. The parents went on to say they missed their little boys but supported them for whom they felt they were. Both boys were diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder. Some of these parents even allowed their children to change their names. These children are also allowed to go to school dressed the way they want, the ones who were born male can go to school wearing girl clothes. These children are ridiculed, taunted, and teased by other children, which boils down to how these children were raised or are being raised. Some parents need to teach their children how to respect others and respect their feelings. They should also teach their children to respect others differences.
