Children Getting Braces? Soft Foods to Eat

Nick Mayer
Is your child getting braces soon? To keep your child from pain, you must give them soft foods to eat! Braces are always difficult to eat with. Certain foods must be avoided with these braces, but here are some easy foods to eat with braces.

Eggs - Eggs are one of the best foods to eat with braces, especially scrambled ones. If you try sprinkling cheese on some scrambled eggs, it is a delicious way to start the day without the kids moaning and groaning for more pain medications.

Pancakes - Pancakes are easy and quick to make and are sure to put a smile on any kid's face. They're never hard enough to give a kid with braces pain, and if they are you might want to just throw them out...

Oatmeal - Oatmeal, for the same reasons as the prior two, is a great meal to give kids with braces. This is a more healthy alternative to the first two though. It gives kids a great start without taking in a lot of sugar, excess calories, and fat.

Yogurt - Yogurt would serve as a good after school snack. Stay away from the yogurt with real fruit, as this is a major chance for pain in a child's mouth. Yogurt is both healthy and delicious, so the kids won't mind eating it!

Pudding - Much like yogurt, pudding is a delicious snack that almost every kid loves. As a kid gets braces, they deserve to get a snack every now and then and if you try for lowfat or low sugar pudding, it should not even be an unhealthy treat!

Pasta - As a dinner food, pasta gives kids the energy, healthy energy at that, to be active throughout the day and stay focused at school. Kids need to eat something at lunch, and why not give them something soft and delicious for dinner?

Apple Sauce - Apple sauce goes along with pudding and yogurt as healthy and treats to eat as a snack. Apple sauce is essentially a fruit that is mashed up. Many parents will mash up foods for their kids to eat when they get braces, so take a break and feed them apple sauce!

Soup - Soup can easily be a dinner food, especially for a kid having trouble eating with braces. Soups such as vegetable soup, tomato soup, split pea soup, etc. are all great choices for a dinner.

That's an extra good point about serving a variety of soups. You can get both protein and vitamins into soups because the cooking process as well as ingredients like tomatoes help tenderize everything you put in, from carrots to noodles to ham tidbits. When I had adult braces last year, I found other soft food ideas at www.braces.org/JustforKids/Recipes.cfm, since the ideas are actually not just for kids. A good overall tip, too, is to carry a tiny proxa-brush with you everywhere to get out those stubborn bits from brackets.
