LDP
There are three different types of hepatitis: Hep A, Hep B, and Hep D. Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver caused by a virus, bacteria, or liver injury-usually due to toxins. The damage to the liver with some forms of hepatitis is due to decreased blood flow to the liver. The most common type of Hepatitis in children is Hepatitis A.

Hepatitis A in Children

Not long t ago a friend of mine went through an episode of Hepatitis A with her youngest child. Once the child is exposed to Hepatitis A they can generally expect to notice the signs and symptoms of Hepatitis A within 3 weeks. The duration of Hepatitis A usually lasts about 6 months and does not cause permanent damage to the liver. Sometimes jaundice appears with Hepatitis A and most daycare centers will not allow the child to return to class until the jaundice is gone. This is especially true if the child is not potty trained. Once the jaundice has cleared up the child should no longer be contagious.

Signs and Symptoms of Hepatitis A

-the signs and symptoms often show up within 3 weeks of being exposed to the Hepatitis A virus

-the child may have jaundice-meaning their skin or the white part of their eyes have a yellow or orange tint

-the symptoms can occur slowly over time or suddenly

-swelling of the liver (the doctor will determine this)

-dark colored urine

-pale colored stools (poo)

How Did My Child Get Hepatitis A

It is reported that a large portion of society has hepatitis but shows no symptoms. The Hepatitis A virus generally lasts for about 6 months in the body. This does not mean the child will experience the myriad of symptoms for 6 full months, it just simply means the virus continues to remain in the body for at least 6 months.

Hepatitis A lives in fecal matter. Children are more susceptible to contracting Hepatitis A due to them not understanding the importance of washing their hands after using the restroom. Hepatitis A can be found in small amounts of food as well especially if the employees do not wash their hands they way they are supposed to.

The foods that are more likely to be contaminated with Hepatitis A include water, shellfish, and milk. When a child ingests foods that have been contaminated with Hepatitis A or they come into contact with contaminated materials and put in their mouth
