Children's Book Review: My First Toothbrush - Quacky & Jackie Learn to Brush

A Book for Young Children to Help Inspire Healthy Brushing

One of the best ways to get young children interested in and excited about brushing their teeth is through well written children's books. After finding my article about baby teeth, I was contacted by Kid's World Productions to preview their new book "My First Toothbrush - Quacky & Jackie Learn to Brush" in exchange for my opinion of the book as well as their products.

In this story Quacky and Jackie learn don't like the feel of their teeth after eating popsicles. They try to fix it with soda, which of course makes it worse. They then turn to the wise old owl who tells them they have to brush their teeth to get rid of the plaque. Through Robo-Brush Quacky and Jackie Learn how to brush their teeth everyday to keep them healthy.

My First Toothbrush comes as a simple board book making it suitable for children under the age of five. The text and pictures are simple and easy for preschoolers to understand. As a reader of the story it flows pretty well when being read out loud. The message is simple and very clear that foods leave plaque on your teeth. You have to brush them every day to help keep your teeth healthy. I did find the part with Robo-brush a little on the cheesy side.

It's not necessarily what I think about the book that counts though. So I put My First Toothbrush to the test with my 4 year old and 2 year old. Over one weekend of time, I swear we read this book at least 10 times. They absolutely LOVED it.... And better yet they responded to it. For several days my son would insist he needed to brush his teeth, both in the morning and evening. Excellent victory for anyone having difficulty getting little ones to brush at all.

This would definitely make a great resource for parents, dentists or educators working with young children. The book is available by itself or with in a kit. The kit includes the book, stickers, parent information and a child size toothbrush. More information and resources from Kids World Productions can be found at http://www.kidsworldproductions.com/

This is cool! I bet my mom wishes she had this book when she was struggling to get me and my younger brother to brush before going to bed every night when we were kids. :o) My roommate's rottweiler is much better behave in that matter than I was (but then her toothpaste tastes like chicken and mine was mint). ;o)
