Children's Books That Made Terrible Movies

Victoria Williams
There is only one thing that bothers me more than any other, a good book turned into a terrible movie. I hate it when you read a good book and get excited when you here its becoming a movie or see a decent movie based on a book then you go and read the book only to be disappointed.

To me what makes a good book movie is how true to the story line it is. Also very important is how well the characters are portrayed without changing their personality. I compiled my list of all time biggest disappointments.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
My number one disappointment was a good movie but I read the book later and was amazed at the differences. They changed some very important parts. The new version "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is so much better. Yes it is a little bit weird with Burton directing it but the characters in the book were not normal either.

Bridge to Terabithia
I just found this one hard to believe. The actors are great but I did not like the imagination parts. It was so unrealistic I could not see children that old pretend making like that. Maybe if they were younger or if the visuals were done differently then it may have been enjoyable.

Black Cauldron
I personally believe this is the worse Disney film I ever seen. The darkness of this feature is nothing what you have come to expect from Disney. The movie doesn't even flow with the book. It is mixed up and just terrible.

Return to Oz
When I first saw this movie when I was 10 it scared me. I loved the original "Wizard of Oz" and thought this would be a good part two. I was so wrong. The film didn't even gross half of its cost to make. Terrible.

Hook
What more is needed to say. I love Peter Pan but I couldn't get over seeing him as old in this movie. I also was not impressed with Tinkerbell. They did humanized her too much with the love for Peter. In the book she was jealous but not in love with him.

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep
Nothing is worse than major landmark mistakes or landmark changes on purpose. The subs in the loch is too much to believe. Also, it does not even open to the ocean as portrayed in the film.

James and the Giant Peach
Plain weird. I enjoyed the book so much better. I had a very different vision of the people and places in mind while reading the book. I prefer the book version so much more.

The Last Unicorn
Poor animation. The movie was so forgettable. Get the book and read it. Don't bother even watching the movie. If you can find it or stand to sit through it, its not worth it.

The Secret of NIMH
Too dark and I could not really follow what it was about. May be just me but I didn't get it.

Stuart Little 2
Part one was cute. Part two was too much. They should have stopped at cute.

This list has been my opinion entirely and not the opinion of this site or its workers.

I agree with ypu on many of these. I usually prefer the book versions!
