Children's Decor Crafts: Pink & White Heart Wall Art

Landra Lynn Jacobs
Finding unique wall art for a child's bedroom walls can sometimes be a bit difficult. This adorable pink and white heart wall art is fully customizable and perfect for a little girl's bedroom or nursery space.

For this project, you will need (per piece of wall art):

- Piece of 1/4 inch thick plywood
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Seven inch heart shaped stencil
- Jigsaw or other tool to cut the wood
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper
- Pink printed scrapbook paper
- White printed scrapbook paper
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Sponge brush
- Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
- Paint stick
- Pour on latex glaze
- Cardboard
- Hanging hardware
- Newsprint and/or a large drop cloth

Due to the messy paints and glazes used in this project, it is best to first cover the space in which you will be working with multiple layers of newsprint and/or a large drop cloth prior to starting. Lay a piece of 1/4 inch thick plywood out flat. Use a ruler and a pencil to create a twelve inch by twelve inch sized square on the wood. Carefully cut out the square with a jigsaw or other wood cutting tool.

Gently sand the outside of the plywood square using medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust off the plywood with a tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth. Prime all sides of the plywood square using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Once dry, paint the plywood using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Ballet Slipper. Apply several thick coats of the pink paint. Let the plywood dry overnight before proceeding.

Place the sheet of pink printed scrapbook paper face down flat on the self healing mat. In pencil and using a seven inch heart shaped stencil, trace the design directly onto the paper. Carefully cut out the heart shape with a craft knife.

Lay the sheet of white print scrapbook paper face down on the self healing mat. (This can be a subtle stripe, marbling, or other white style print.) Trim the twelve inch by twelve inch size down to a ten inch by ten inch size using a ruler and a craft knife.

Apply a thick coat of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of the white paper with a sponge brush. Immediately adhere the paper onto the center of the pink painted board. Repeat this process with the heart shape, adhering it in the center of the white paper piece. Let all glues dry completely.

Place the plywood onto a piece of cardboard. Pour on a bit of latex glaze over the art. Extend the glaze to the edges of the wood with a paint stick. Add several coats of the glaze to create a glossy sheen. Let the glaze cure fully before installing hanging hardware on the back of the wood and hanging, as desired.

TIP: Add additional details using chipboard cutouts, such as your child's name or other wording, before adding the glaze.
