Children's Table for Holiday Dinners

Jane Vee
Do you love decorating your dining table only to have it destroyed by your dinner guests' children? Maybe you would like to have a conversation, but the children are too noisy. Anyone who wants a Christmas dinner for adults and children to run smoothly should have a designated place for each to eat. The adults can have their conversation and the children can have fun, food, and talking without yelling over the adults if there are two tables. Here are a few ideas for a children's table.

Durable - A children's table should be able to take punishment. The table's cover should be something that you do not mind getting ruined. One of the best ways to cover a children's table besides a plastic table cloth from the Dollar Tree for $1 is paper bags or construction paper. Tape the paper together to make your table cloth. The children can tear it or spill anything they want on it without ruining a good table cloth. You will be stress free with a durable table cloth.

Fun - You want your children's table to entice the kids to be quiet and sit. In order to do that the table has to be fun. Have a table covering that the children can draw on. They can make their own place mat. Set crayons or coloring markers out when setting the table. As the kids eat or even after they eat, they will draw or write on the table covering. You may want to use construction paper or inexpensive table cloths so the kids can enjoy themselves.

Child proof - Make a child's dining table that is child proof. You can set your table with Christmas theme non-breakable dinnerware. Have a table cloth that even if a child does destroy it, you will not be upset. Make sure the material of your table cloth will protect your table and if not, use a protective table cloth under the child's table cloth. Another child proof idea is to let the parents get their kids food and you will not have to have food setting on the children's table. Poor the children's cups half full. Spills can be kept to a minimum.

Easy Cleanup - The first rule of incorporating a children's table into your Christmas setting is to make sure it is an easy cleanup. No one wants to make more work for themselves, especially at Christmas. Use a table cloth you can throw away. Do not worry about washing it and saving it for next year. For the children's table you may want to use an all plastic and all expendable table setting. With paper plates and plastic cutlery coming in a variety to choose from, why waste the time, money, and aggravation of using fine china for a kid's table?

You want all your guests to have fun, including the kids. Make their table a table that they can enjoy sitting at. The table cloth should entertain the kids as much, if not more than the meal. Happy kids stay out of parents' hair and the parents, being your guests, will enjoy themselves. A kids' table that is an easy cleanup for you and childproof will make you less stressed.

Great ideas! I'll keep them in mind if we ever host young kids at a holiday dinner.
