Childtime Daycare's License Suspended in Wake of Foster Child's Murder

State Seeking to Revoke License of Center that Cared for Allison Newman

Plymouth, MI - Childtime Child Care Inc. in Plymouth was forced to shut its doors Monday as the State revoked its license pending an investigation. The suspension comes in the wake of the death of foster child Allison Newman, a 2-year-old who was attending the daycare.

The foster mother, Carol Poole, has been charged in her death. She died at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor after life support was removed. Her death is due to a traumatic head injury, though her maternal grandfather alleges that she had other bruising on her at the time.

Maureen Sorbet, spokesperson for Michigan DHS, stated that they are seeking to revoke the center's license for failure to report in the Newman case. A judge will make a recommendation about the center's license within 30 days, at which point the state will make its final decision.

Last week, a former employee of Childtime, Cher Majeske, stated that she had seen bruises and other marks on Allison Newman months before her death. Allison allegedly stated that her mother had caused the marks. She reported the marks to her supervisor, who stated that the agency did an internal investigation but never reported the marks to authorities. Daycare providers are mandated reporters by law.

Childtime Child Care Inc. opened its doors in 1997. It was licensed to care for 148 children. According to the Detroit News, it had been cited twice in the past year for violations. In January, a worker picked up a 3-year-old girl by an arm and injuring her. In April, the facility was cited because the workers weren't washing their hands after changing diapers. According to the Free Press, they were cited in November of last year as well, for not having enough employees to supervise children playing in a room.

Amy Popp, spokesperson for the center, stated that Allison had been attending Childtime for about 9 months.

Carol Poole will be back in court on November 13th for a preliminary hearing in her case, where she is facing charges of felony murder, first-degree child abuse and involuntary manslaughter. She is reportedly in custody at this time.

I worked at this center. Jackie never asked anyone to perform a task she wouldn't do herself. She was hired after a very popular director was let go. The prevoius director let staff run the center and not follow any rules. The same can be said for the parents. parents complained that Jackie ws now making them pay the correct tuition amounts. She was constantlly in the classrooms. Some days I wondered how she got her paperwork done because she spent so much time in the classrooms. Jackie was fighting an uphill battle. No one mentions that she was found not guilty, or that while on the stand, Cher and Melissa changed their stories. Jackie didn't even have to testify. Justice was served.

I THINK PEOPLE ARE MISSING THE POINT! AND THAT IS THE CRIME TOOK PLACE AT THE CHILD"S HOME AND
NOT AT THE CENTER.I KNOW JACKIE HADWIN AND I LIKED HER VERY MUCH. IF FOR ONE MINUTE SHE FELT
ANY CHILD WAS IN DANGER SHE WOULD HAVE CALLED THE POLICE HERSELF.

I worked at this center over the summer and can only say wonderful things about the teachers that were there while I was. The director, however, is another story. She was rude to employees and parents and had no people skills whatsoever. She never interacted with the children and employees. I don't know why anyone would have hired her and kept her with all the parent and employee complaints. I quit right after Allison died because I refused to work with Jackie and her constant lies. Please understand that us teachers did everything we could. Jackie is the one who did not believe us even though we told her more than once. And we were trained that we were only allowed to go to the director in situations like this.

My child was at this facility when the January incident took place. Since my son was in the class where the teacher picked up another student by the arm, I called the director of the school to find out some information. I simply wanted to know what kind of measures were taking place to insure the safety of the children. I didn't even ask the name of the teacher (I already knew as the other parents were talking, but I didn't want to point fingers). The director, Jackie Hadwin, was not only rude but she rushed me off of the phone and told me that she had to "protect the privacy of her employees". I wasn't asking who - I just wanted to be sure my son was going to be safe. The was it was handled was terrible. Also, the facility was dirty and I felt it was unsanitary. I took my son out shortly after the January incident, as did many parents. I am glad that they closed. No person should have to worry about their kids when they drop them off to be cared for while they are at work.

Some of these people that do private child care worry me. They know parents with children under school age always need child care and can basically charge whatever they want and could rake in a lot of cash per child before even worrying about failing inspections.Desperate parents stick their children in before taking a good look at the facilities and truly checking accredidation. My wife has done home child care and is working at an on-base child care. I complained so much about the rules, but when you have kids you know that national-accredidation is worth every dollar you pay for it.

I used to work in child care centers and owned one for awhile. People who are in child care take a special consitution... harming a child, when you are being paid and entrusted with a child's safety is despicable. I'll be interested in hearing how all this turns out.
