China Overtakes US as World's Largest Energy Consumer

IEA Preliminary Data Shows the Inevitable

John Melendez
Preliminary data from an upcoming International Energy Agency (IEA) report shows us the inevitable: that China has overtaken the US as the world's largest overall consumer of energy.

China's inevitable rise to the top was much faster than expected by many analysts, this in part due to its relative immunity to the global financial crisis when compared to the United States.

For energy consumption watchdogs, this does not come as any surprise. While phenomenal growth in energy consumption has taken place in China over the last decade, analysts foresee continued growth into the future. Since 2000, China's energy demand has doubled.

Details on this development are forthcoming with the relesae of IEA's World Energy Outlook 2010, to be released on November 9, 2010.
