China Restaurant in New Smyrna Beach, Florida Review

Deemed "Best Chinese Food to Take Out or Eat In"

Kathy Browning
We discovered China Restaurant in New Smyrna Beach soon after relocating to the area in 2006. After three days of driving across the country to our new home, we were in need of something fast and affordable that could be delivered. Our new neighbors recommended the restaurant and we've enjoyed their food for over four years.

China Restaurant is located in the Indian River Village Shopping Center at 755 East 3rd Avenue. The unpretentious building is marked by a giant red sign that says "China". You can easily miss it if you don't keep your eyes wide open. It is nestled between Bob Ross Painting Studio and Off the Hook Raw Bar and Grill.

China offers an enormous menu consisting of lunch specials, appetizers and soups, along with traditional Chinese entrées such as Fried Rice, Chow Mein, Chop Suey, and Lo Mein. China also offers a variety of Chef's Suggestions and combination platters.

China Restaurant lunch specials are served daily between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Entrées are served with roast pork fried rice and choice of egg drop or wonton soup. China offers 26 lunch selections; 9 of which are hot and spicy. All are available for under $5.00.

China's lunch portions are large enough to share. My daughter and I order the Moo Goo Gai Pan and Pepper Steak so we can indulge in a bit of both. When she isn't around to share, I order the Hot and Spicy Shrimp and Chicken which pairs well with the egg drop soup to cool off the heat in your mouth. It's an exceptional bargain at only $4.55. I don't know any place else where I can receive a great tasting and filling seafood lunch for less.

Personally, I feel the dinner combo platters offer the best value. China offers 25 different entrée selections each served with an egg roll and roast pork fried rice. The average cost is $6.50 and easily provides enough food for two people. My personal favorite dinner combos include: Roast Pork Lo Mein, Shrimp Chop Suey, Chicken with Cashew Nuts, and Fried Chicken Wings; which are the best wings I've ever eaten.

We rarely order appetizers or soups because the combo platters are more than sufficient. But, every now and then I indulge in China's cream cheese wontons. For a mere $3.35, you receive ten delicately crisp deep fried won tons stuffed with rich cream cheese. My husband doesn't like cream cheese, so I always have leftovers. I reheat them in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes and they taste just as fresh the second day.

Over the years, I've tried about 50 of the entrées and lunch specials. I am on a personal quest to try everything on the China menu at least once. With nearly 200 selections it could take awhile to complete my mission; especially since I only eat Chinese food once or twice a month. However, when I do have a craving, China Restaurant is the only place I call.

One trend we have noticed is China takes much longer to deliver on Thursday evenings when the TV reality show, Survivor is airing. Apparently, residents of New Smyrna Beach love to eat Chinese food when watching the show. If you order delivery any other time, your food usually arrives in 30 minutes or less. If Survivor is airing, delivery time can be as long as 90 minutes.

If you live in New Smyrna Beach and haven't tried China yet, you are missing out! If you're visiting our fabulous beach town and want affordable Chinese food that tastes great, you must give China a try! The staff is friendly and many of the employees have been there since we arrived in the Sunshine State.

China offers free delivery to New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater. Minimum order requirements are $10 within NSB and $20 within Edgewater. You can charge your order by phone or pay by cash. Please don't forget to give your driver a tip!

Too bad we don't have a China's near us! Sounds great (we never get delivery - we always 'pick up' - you just can't trust those drivers who take forever!) cheers :)
