China Reverses Itself on UFO that Disrupted Air Traffic

A UFO (photo) emanating white light (photo) hovered over Eastern China forcing unplanned landings at Xiaoshan Airport about 9 pm Wednesday. Authorities there initially claimed to have completed their investigation and determined the UFO's identity on Friday.

China Daily, the state-run newspaper, citing an unnamed source, reported that the Chinese government determined that the UFO had military connections and was planning to make an official statement later in the day. Daily Finance noted that Chinese airline stocks rallied in the wake of the Xiaoshan Airport UFO sighting, with 3.9% to 5.6% gains.

By Saturday, China Daily's reports indicated a Chinese government about-face, with the Civil Aviation Administration denying that any conclusion had yet been drawn as to the identity of Thursday's UFO near Xiaoshan Airport.

Any potential alien connection with a UFO reported a week earlier in Northwest China was debunked when authorities identified the object debris from an American intercontinental missile.

UFOs: Is the Public Prepared to Know the Truth?

UFO buffs discussing the Xiaoshan Airport UFO sighting in the abovetopsecretforum raised interesting points about China's latest UFO sighting. One commenter noted that a Google News search for UFO sightings turned up one headline about the Chinese UFO and one proclaiming "Italian MP Worried about UFOs." The commenter noted that the mention of UFOs has become as commonplace as weather talk.

The nonchalance associated with UFO discussion is perhaps explained by public opinions revealed in unbiased polling. A Scripps-Howard News Service and Ohio University poll in 2008 showed that more than half of Americans believe that extraterrestial life exists in the universe, and one-third say it's likely or somewhat likely that extraterrestial aliens have visited Earth.

And a 2010 Reuters Ipsos poll in April reported even stronger beliefs in alien life in select countries. The poll showed that 40 percent of the Indians and Chinese polled believe that aliens walk disguised among humans. Overall, 80 percent of the 23,000 adults polled in 22 countries reject the notion that aliens live on Earth.

Thirteen American astronauts have reportedly acknowledged witnessing UFOs. Their observations are generally deemed more credible than those of civilians due to their familiarity with various types of air and spacecraft.

Is the time ripe for a government somewhere in the world to acknowledge that UFOs of extraterrestial origin exist?

Will China Be First to Acknowledge Extraterrestial UFOs?

If China were to publicly acknowledge the existence of extraterrestial UFOs, what reaction could it expect?

A commenter on abovetopsecret's forum predicted that the first government to officially reveal the existence of UFOs will likely benefit from a huge reputation boost and will gain substantial power.

So far, however, there is no indication that China plans such an announcement. In light of Friday's China Daily report, it's possible that Chinese authorities know exactly what was flying over Xiaoshan Airport on Thursday and have traced its origin not to aliens but to the Chinese military.

Do I think the average Joe could handle the truth about UFOs? No. So in a way, I am glad governments try to keep things hush hush. I am also a subscriber to the ancient alien theory.

This is interesting. I agree that the first country to reveal aliends and UFOs will have big advantage. Go ahead, tell us the truth!

    not exactly a close up.

In may have been in 1980 that I looked up into the afternoon LA sky. I saw two silver discs do a perfect circle in tandem. Then they flew off in a northwest direction. First one disappered and the second one seconds later. There are too many reports about UPO's that our government keep us the dark about them. Theya aren't telling us all that they know or willinjg to admit, are they?

Carol, stop wearing the "I'm a super-dupe eager-believer" T-shirt. Most of those "reportedly" true stories are bogus media/loony-toon inventions, and those that aren't, don't involve spaceflight. Get a grip and restore your credibility.

AboveTopSecret certainly has a lively set of threads on this story. Everybody's got opinions, there's confusion over imagery everywhere, and conflicting press reports remain unresolved. The one potentially productive line of inquiry that I've suggested -- determine what was on the celestial sphere in front of the airliner pilots who first spotted the 'bogie' -- seems to have been universally rejected as being too dangerous to already-reached conclusions. Sad. Anybody can do it. I have. You might find it eye-opening!
