The name, "re-education through labor" doesn't sound all that bad but I have to warn you, if you watch this video here you will see the horrible conditions that these prisoners are made to live under. They work from morning until late in the evening with little food, sorting through toxic materials with no protective garments. Most of the "crimes" that they commit range from being Christian to protesting for a free democracy. You can watch the video here.
The latest man, Wei Qiang, has been sentenced to two years within the labor camps. He is an international art student who has been vocal about censorship. He was protesting in Beijing's downtown Wangfujing shopping street. Most of the Chinese media reports state that China deals with those who break the law expeditiously and "detention of Ai Weiwei was dealt in accordance with the law."
In America where we protest freely over everything and anything it is extremely difficult to understand why a man would be imprisoned for wanting freedom. Freedom comes with a price and in China, the price of freely expressing your views can translate into two or more years in a labor re-education camp. The Chinese authorities want to break your will and silence your voice.
Most of the workers in the camps are making products that will be exported to the United States. Think about the blood, sweat and tears that went into that cheap product the next time you see "Made in China."
I will be thinking about Wei Qiang, a young man who just wanted to be an artist without censorship. Sadly he will spend the next two years re-evaluating if his outspokenness was worth it.

Post a CommentSo sad. Definitely keeping the soldiers in my prayers.
well written - thank you
We could be next, great article.,
"You can avoid evil, but you can never avoid the consequence of avoiding evil". Don't EVER say "it won't happen here", folks, cuz with stuff like the "fairness doctrine" and the "net neutrality" law looming on the horizon, we're well on our way to exactly this sort of waking nightmare!
There are still a lot of human rights issues in China. While it's not our place to tell other countries what to do, every human being ought to have certain rights. It's worrying that in many Middle Eastern countries there are cruel laws in the name of God that definitely take away human rights. I hope these are never imposed on the rest of the world.
Nice write-up!
Wow.
Rights can be taken away one at a time. Rules loving Americans may get exactly what they wish for.
enlightening, thanks for the write up.
Many do not know that Christians are still being persecuted in other countries. It is very sad. And the communism is still around and trying so hard to infiltrate any country they can. As much as we want to just live and let live, sooner or later I fear we will not be able to turn our heads from certain things. We are indeed a Blessed country. good article
