He also had damage to the coronet band (the top part of the hoof that connects to the leg) from abscesses that had broken out. After the abscesses burst, the sores were not healing first due to leg braces, then due to boots that rubbed them raw.
In addition circulation to his hooves was compromised since he did not walk on them correctly. The pumping of the heart is not enough to push circulation to the hooves and back up. Movement is an essential part of pumping blood through the hooves. So without his whole hoof coming in contact with the ground not enough blood was being supplied to his hooves. As one farrier put it, we could eventually see him lose the one hoof all together as circulation became more and more compromised.
Protecting his hooves from further damage was the first priority, which we did by putting shoes on him. Yet shoes can provide their own problems with also hindering circulation as they do not allow the hoof to expand and contract naturally. But boots and other methods that had been tried to protect his hooves only caused further damage or didn't work.
With one problem out of the way, we then could focus on what to do about promoting circulation to his hooves. At this time another rescue recommend that we check with a company called For Love of the Horse, a company that produces Chinese herbal formulas for horses. They recommended a product called Hoof Health and Growth.
Within weeks we started seeing new hoof growth and healing coming to the coronet band. Within three months, almost all the damage he'd done to his hooves had completely grown out. The coronet bands are healed and very healthy once again. He has had so much hoof growth that For Love of the Horse felt he could probably be taken off the formula.
For Love of the Horse has been awesome to work with. They are very knowledgeable people that truly love horses. I have been extremely impressed with their formulas, especially this one for hoof health. I do not hesitate to recommend it to others for their horses, and I will continue to use it as needed for my personal horses and the other horses under my care.
My only negative about these Chinese herbal mixes is the expense. But considering what they do for the horses, the expense is well worth it.
