Chinese Imports: How Much Will You Spend?

Mike Spain
Product and compliance costs are just some of the expenses to expect when importing products from China.

Product costs. The product you are importing from China is going to have a price, be it set or negotiated. Some of the hidden costs include those for touring and inspecting the factory where those products are made. These are optional costs, of course, and depend on the size of your operation. However, the control this gives you over the quality of the end product can be quite valuable over the long term.

Compliance costs. According to China-Window.com, "compliance issues can be very complicated for some products, and you might need a good customs house broker." Such a broker will have an expertise in dealing with the regulations involved in importing products from China. This can vastly accelerate the importation process and cut down on costly penalties later on.

Import duties. These are the taxes charged by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency. You can calculate what you will owe them by using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule.

Lading costs. These are going to be your major costs, which include loading your products on the transportation vehicle and having them properly inspected. Of course once your product is in the United States, you will be responsible for transporting the product to your offices or distribution center, which is yet another charge.

I bought a skillet the other day that was made in ITALY. It's one of the few items I've seen that wasn't made in China, so I snapped it up. Besides, I needed a new skillet anyway.
