1. Joey Yung- She is one of my favorite Chinese female singers since I fell in love with hearing her first song. Since she was born and raised mostly in Hong Kong, it should be no surprise that most of her songs were sung in Cantonese which a majority of her songs were in with some Mandarin and very few English ones in the mix. Not to sound mean but she doesn't sound great on singing songs in English. She was voted as "The most popular female singer in 2008."
2. Coco Lee- She have some great songs and I found out about her back in 1999 when she appear in a cover magazine called "A Magazine" which I think no longer exist. It was for Asian-American audiences to keep updating that community about different stuff as well as interview these different Asian actors, actresses as well as singers. Coco Lee was one of the lucky ones. A majority of her songs are sung in Mandarin, one whole album in Cantonese with not too many albums with songs only in English. She sings alright in English. She sang a few songs that made it into the movie such as in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "The Runaway Bride" with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. She was my favorite singer back in 1999 and 2000 until Joey Yung took over.
3. Vanness Wu- This guy got the ab of a six pack that can make women melt when they see him since most asian guys doesn't have that kind of abs. There may be Asian guys that might be jealous of him because of his abs as well as his singing ability. He sings great in Mandarin Chinese as well as in English which he raps. Doesn't know any Cantonese. A Vietnamese girl in California introduced me to this singer and have enjoy listening to some of his songs.
4. Wang Lee Hom- I found out about him by accident when I saw his music video called "Can You Feel My World" which only the title have it in English while a big chunk are in Mandarin Chinese. He doesn't know how to sing Cantonese like a lot of native Mandarin speakers but of what I once read, he knows how to speak some and he speak and sings great in English as well. Another Asian American who was born and raised in New York but have a company in Boston, Massachusett's Chinatown.
5. Jolin Tsai- Same age as Joey Yung (both a year younger than me), she was born and raised mostly in Taiwan so she only knows Mandarin and English. She wrote a book teaching Chinese people on how to learn English. If only I remember what the title is called.
6. Janice Wei- She is not Chinese but famous on singing songs in Cantonese as well as in Mandarin Chinese. She has a twin sister which sings different genre on music. I first knew about her when I heard her sing a Cantonese song with Michael Yue in a song called "Children's Tales" in a music video she was in but it was made in 2007. Her duet with Michael Yue appeared in Karey's album which she is one of the newest singers in 2008 but it might just be in my version I got. Her real name is Janice Vidal and adopted Wei Lan as her Chinese name.
7. Jay Chou- Dubbed king of the Chinese pop. He is pretty much popular in Taiwan which he got started at since he was raised there for most of his life. I have seen and heard some of his songs which he only sings them in Mandarin. In one of his music videos, he interacted with a Cantonese speaking girl and to me, there are bound to be miscommunication if you don't understand the same dialect in that case.
8. Kelly Chen- In late 2008, was dubbed one of the four main singers to began their stardom alongside Joey Yung, Miriam Yeung, and Eason Chan as a few included people. She sings songs in Cantonese and Mandarin and have very few English songs. Another singer that shouldn't have decided to sing a few songs in English.
These singers are a good start when it comes to hearing Chinese songs. The songs nowadays are popular and unlike the Chinese opera songs that most assume from non-Chinese communities. If you ever wanted to learn Mandarin, they are great to hear on how they pronounce in songs. It's one of the ways to learn the language. Unfortunately for Cantonese songs, most of the words are not sung the way native Cantonese speakers speak. Very rare will you hear how it's actually spoken in songs with colloquial Cantonese words. But always have fun no matter what foreign language you want to learn.
