Chiropractic Care for Children

Does Your Child Need a Chiropractor?

Nikki
My daughter was born with a spinal curvature and I've spent my fair share of time in the waiting room of a chiropractor's office and have witnessed a lot of spinal manipulations. I also have two uncles who are chiropractors and have learned a lot from listening to them and watching them interact with their patients. Over the years, I learned that some people think chiropractors are only for adults, but that is a misconception. Babies as young as one month old, and even younger, can be safely treated by a chiropractor.

Adults sometimes think that a child will receive the same type of adjustment as they receive, but that is not true. The chiropractor will adjust and modify their techniques based on the age and size of your child and their specific need. Also, infants and young children's spines don't have the same long term muscle tightening that is seen in adults, so a spinal adjustment on a child is very gentle and comfortable.

Trauma to the spine of your baby can occur during childbirth as the baby is being pulled or twisted out of the birth canal. Over time the trauma experienced during the birthing process can manifest itself in the form of colic, lack of appetite, chronic ear infections, unexplained crying, or other signs of health problems. Instead of immediately running to your child's pediatrician, consider consulting a Doctor of Chiropractics for a drug-free approach to the health of your child.

A chiropractor will provide your baby with the proper care he or she needs to make sure that their spine and nervous system stay in top shape as they grow. The human spine controls how healthy a child will grow as they age so it is never too early begin taking your child on his or her first visit to a chiropractor.

As your baby grows and starts becoming active, their body can be put under a lot of stress. Children play everyday and as they run, jump, hop and twist their little bodies into all sorts of positions their spines could be taking a beating. Parents rarely give it a second thought, but all of this daily activity can potentially injure their spine and nervous system a little bit every day. Then over time, the injuries can build up and cause problems later on in their teen or adult years. Parents should pay attention to the aches and "growing pains" that children complain about and consider taking their child for a chiropractic consultation.

Chiropractors can make simple adjustments to the spine that can help treat a wide variety of ailments such as the common cold, flu, rashes, colic, asthma, allergies, bedwetting, upset stomach, and even hyperactivity.

Children go to their regular medical doctors, dentists, and eye doctors for checkups to help them stay healthy. So why not take your child to a chiropractor make sure their spine is healthy and working properly? Chiropractic care is a safe, natural, drug free alternative to consider in conjunction with traditional medical care.

I am not a licensed doctor and chiropractics may not be suitable for some children. If you have concerns, talk to your child's medical doctor to see if regular visits for your child to a chiropractor will be of benefit to them.

I have regular visits to the chiropractor, but I hadn't thought about children being there. Interesting article!

I hadn't ever asked myself about chiropractic care for a child. My adjustments have been invaluable to me. My chiropractor uses the technique called "directional non-force." I am now free of problems that I thought I would have forever.
