Chocobo Tales Walkthrough Part 3: Racing Against the Jailbirds

In the previous part, we have completed our first minigame: Trial Mode in Vol.1 Race to the Top in The Adamantoise and the Cactuar. Now we will finish the story and move on in the game.

One of the events that happen if you complete a minigame in Story Mode is that you get a new epilogue. Here, you will see just one: Prickly Pride. Tap your stylus onto that title and enjoy the epilogue. After that, the story comes alive: the Cactuar pops out of the story book and pops that pesky balloon tied to sealed card! Go to the sealed card to rescue one of your fellow Chocobos, Gazzy.

Now a new challenger appears: Irma. She is in control of many Jailbirds who will pester you throughout the game. This time, you will face only one and in the same story book. The minigame premise is the same, but this time you are competing against the Jailbird, not against time. Fortunately for you, this Jailbird is stupid as you can pull away from the bird. Complete this stage just like you did in Trial Mode to complete this minigame.

Irma will be upset at you and leaves. After you discuss with your friends in the farm house about Irma's role in all this mess, go outside and follow the road south (alas, the jailbirds are preventing you from re-entering the book). On the next screen, continue going south towards the intersection to find a pop-up card: 061 Mist Dragon - Mist Breath. These will be used in Pop-Up Duels later. For now, just head east from this intersection. In the next screen, you will see some pink Chocobo running up the screen. Follow it, and keep moving north. You will discover this pink Chocobo's name: Peekaboo. He locks the gate so you can't go into the volcano above. Now return south until you reach the town circle. You will be prompted to save from here.

A new chapter begins: Mt. Magma and the Four Crystals. Chubby seems like he fainted, but it turns out he was just hungry. Meat is difficult to come by in the real world, so let's try the picture book. Go outside and move towards the book. Since the Jailbirds ran off to who-knows-where, you can enter the book. Check out Battle Mode and you'll find that the game is now set to Lv. 2. This will help your friend Chubby, so start the game now.

The game won't let you get away with sloppy play anymore, so we should try to get our Chocobo up the mountain within 30 seconds. The key thing about this minigame is that the boulders fall down in a predetermined pattern. Thus, we can form our own predetermined path and timing for our mountain climb. In this level, we start at the outside lane against three rival Jailbirds. It's possible to get stuck at the starting line by those Jailbirds, so break free by rotating the Adamantoise to face northeast once the game starts. Once you're free, stay along the far edge of the mountain pass and move east towards the bend. The boulder here will move towards the inside of the bend, so lift the stylus here to wait until the boulder clears the bend. Now move up to the second level of the mountain. Stay along the far edge of this level and move up. Even if you get hit by the boulder when you move north to the flag, your rival Jailbirds are still meddling about the bottom of the mountain.

If you are having trouble with following path and timing, just remember that the boulders fall down in a predetermined pattern, and your path and timing will come to you intuitively.

In the next part, we will move on from this story and enter a new fable.
