Chocolate Bowl: Dark Chocolate Pomegranate - Product Review

Tina Twito
My husband likes to pack a sweet treat in our daughter's lunch from time to time, and was looking for something she would enjoy, when he came across "Chocolate Bowl: Dark Chocolate Pomegranate", Our daughter loves dark chocolate and pomegranates, so he knew this was probably a sure fire hit. And he was right.

Chocolate Bowl: Dark Chocolate Pomegranate comes in a pale beige package, edged on the top and bottom with bands of maroon, with what look like gold bands in between. Below the "Brookside" logo, a peaceful little scene of a tree by a brook, the product takes center stage. A crystal bowl, surrounded by pieces of pomegranate, is heaped high with the treats, giving the product a look of tempting elegance.

The packaging goes on to tell us that Chocolate Bowl: Dark Chocolate Pomegranate is made up of "Masterfully prepared sweetened real fruit juice pieces, made from a blend of pomegranate and other select concentrated fruit juices, [which] are dipped in our extra creamy pure dark chocolate to create this decadent taste sensation." While I would have liked this product to be ALL about the pomegranate it still sounded pretty good. The last bit of information on the package tells us that "Chocolate Bowl: Dark Chocolate Pomegranate" is a natural source of flavanol antioxidants.

The chocolate coating on Chocolate Bowl: Dark Chocolate Pomegranate is pretty good. While I have had dark chocolate that I like better, it was very flavorful and creamy. The centers are, in my opinion, what make these chocolates really special. They are very uniquely flavorful, tart, chewy and just delicious. The juices in the centers include pomegranate, cranberry, apple, pineapple, and elderberry. This odd combination explains why the flavor is unique! I do think the cranberry and pomegranate stand out a bit over the other flavors though.

A serving of 20 pieces of Chocolate Bowl: Dark Chocolate Pomegranate have a rather large 180 calories. But I think that's a sizable serving, and you could cut back and still enjoy. (Though I've nibbled at least 4 or 5 while writing this review, so I could see you hitting 20 pretty easily). Less alarming was that each serving contains 20 percent of the daily-recommended value of saturated fat. For chocolates this is actually fairly low. There is also a nice little dose of dietary fiber (4 percent) and iron (6 percent), a gram of protein, and 20 percent of the daily recommended value of vitamin C. (Could this be the aforementioned "flavanoid antioxidant"?) Nothing to get excited about, but bot bad for candy.

I was not familiar with Brookside Foods before trying Chocolate Bowl: Dark Chocolate Pomegranate, but now that I have, I would be more than happy to try the other varieties shown on the back (Strawberries and cream looks especially enticing.) And while I don't recommend Chocolate Bowl: Dark Chocolate Pomegranate if you are looking for the best dark chocolate, I do recommend it as a unique sweet treat.
