Chocolate Cheerios? Definitely a New Era

Chocolate Cheerios Have Arrived, and Things Will Never Be the Same

A supermarket ad is pitching new Chocolate Cheerios. Yes, Chocolate Cheerios. Is the world's most famous "healthy" kids' cereal selling out to Willy Wonka?

My first reaction was "yuck." To investigate, I found a website called "yumyucky.com," even though I had only Googled for "Chocolate Cheerios," not for "Chocolate Cheerios yuck".

To my surprise, the engaging site producer named Josie gives a generally upbeat review. Josie says Chocolate Cheerios "taste like Cocoa Puffs, but won't tear up the roof of your mouth." She adds that Chocolate Cheerios, with a moderate 9 grams of sugar per serving, are "sweet and chocolately, but won't leave you with sugary-crap guilt."

Okay, alright. Chocolate Cheerios may prove a boon to responsible moms, as well as to adult children such as myself. Still, Josie in her photograph appears to be from a younger generation than my own. An oldster such as myself who remembers that old jingle ("Big G, Little O, GO, with Cheerios!") simply can't reconcile the idea of Chocolate Cheerios.

These newfangled Chocolate Cheerios, now on sale at Kroger and other fine supermarkets, have arrived on the heels of Fruity Cheerios. Recently, with the aid of Kroger's double manufacturers coupon offer, your author purchased a box of Fruity Cheerios for the grandchildren. I am a conscientious grandparent and so, of course, it was my responsibility to first try a sample bowl.

The appearance of the Fruity Cheerios is wonderful. They lack the sugary crust found on Froot Loops. However, soon I noticed that the yellow ones didn't taste like lemons and the orange ones didn't taste like oranges and the purple ones didn't taste like grapes. So I looked at the box, and there is only one fruit juice ingredient: pear puree. These are actually Pear Cheerios, obviously with a ton of various food colorings for appearance. Yuck!

Chocolate Cheerios? Fruity Cheerios? Gimme back my plain ol' Cheerios. And, hopefully, we won't see Kellogg's Chocolate Corn Flakes in our future.

Original is best with most things, so I think I'll stick to that too. LOL

I think I'd like to try these. However I still love Honeynut and Regular Cheerios the best.

Your first reaction to Chocolate Cheerios was "yuck" and my first reaction was "OMG do they really have that?!!" Haha. I'll be searching for them on my next grocery shopping trip.

Kyla, am not only old school but also old teeth, and the honey nut are awfully brittle. Whole grain, I'd rather have Wheaties. So now you know, lol ..... ~~ mike ~~

We haven't tried either, but our kids are sure to ask. Thanks for the heads-up on the "pear" Cheerios too! I wonder, how old school are you? What do you think about the honey nut or whole grain versions?

Well... I do like these, but I love and appreciate your take on this with the new age vs. old school comparison.

And I totally want to find that "old jingle" on YouTube now! hehehe
