Chocolate the Rainbow

Mallory Lindsly
During Easter Break, one usually inhales as many chocolate eggs and bunnies that can fit in his or her belly. Easter is when the chocolate kings come out to flex their mussels, Cadbury, Russell Stover and Dove are some of the top manufactures and producers of chocolate candy for Easter. However, one fruity competitor, Skittles, has recently introduced its Chocolate Mix to get on the chocolate.
The new packaging steers away from brightly colored bags to a dark brown bag with lighter brown swirls in the design of the bag. There is however, still the colorful rainbow still on the package. The skittles vary from different shades of brown.
The different flavors of skittles in the Chocolate Mix are Brownie Batter, Chocolate Pudding, Chocolate Caramel, and S'mores. Oh and ... Vanilla? After trying these candies I still do not see why this new "Chocolate Mix" incorporates Vanilla because the last time I checked, vanilla and chocolate are polar opposites. Seen as a whole the bag is mediocre. The mix is not as fulfilling the original Skittles, or even good as plain M&Ms. But one can see the faults when it is broken down flavor by flavor.
Brownie Batter (darkest brown)- I find this flavor very tasty. It is the closest one to an actual chocolate flavor. It is best compared to the middle of the chocolate flavored Tooties roll pops.
Chocolate Pudding (dark brown)- This flavor has a very artificial chocolate flavor. It is basically just very sweet coco.
Chocolate Caramel (caramel colored)- This flavor is very sweet. The caramel flavor is stronger compared to the chocolate. However it does faintly remind me of New Orleans Chocolate Roman candy. Maybe the skittles company tasted this during its Mardi Gras break and decided to mix it into the chocolate mix.
S'mores (pale caramel colored)- This flavor is very, very sweet. However it does not taste anything like S'mores, in fact id doest taste like chocolate at all. It is very good but tastes more like the top layer of crème Brule.
And finally...Vanilla (cream colored)- No hint of chocolate at all, but then again it is just plain vanilla. This flavor tastes more like Pillsbury's® Vanilla Creamy Supreme® Frosting.
To fully enjoy this package one should eat them with similar colors together. When mixing up the colors, the sweetness and tastes run together and taste like a concoction out of Jelly Belly's Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans.
These Skittles were first introduced at the last All Candy Expo from Sept. 17, 2007- Sept. 19, 2007. According to allcandyexpo.com the next Expo will be held on May 20, 2008 - May 22, 2008. Many vendors that Spring Hill Students shop at attend this Expo including: Bruno's, The Fresh Market, Sam's Club, CVS, BP-Amoco and Shell Oil.
Make sure to keep your eyes open at any of the local convince stores so you too can try these chocolate colored Skittles and see if you can Chocolate the Rainbow.
