Chocolate Roses

When I got your flowers
they brought back the whole story.
It made me remember again
how you were coming to see me.

The roses were to be a sign of your love
but they got here
and you never made it .

It was so dark that night
I think the moon was hiding
from what was going to happen.

The chocolate was for my sweetness,
you'd said,
but I tasted them today
mixed with salty tears.

They say you swerved to miss an animal
and hit a tree.
"Died instantly. Felt no pain."
was the only comfort they could give.
But it wasn't comfort at all
because you were coming for me.
A movie, dinner, and chocolate cake with two forks.

The thought of chocolate makes me sick
with wanting you,
and roses make me see
the flowers on your grave.
I know that chocolate will forever make me queasy
and roses will always make me cry.
So don't send me flowers
because chocolate roses will always mean goodbye.
