Chodroff Wins TT Opener at Valley of the Sun Stage Race

Jelly Belly professional, Johnathan Chodroff, won the opening time trial in convincing fashion by 49 seconds over Luis Amaran on Friday. This puts Chodroff in excellent position to defend his lead through the weekend. Traditionally those who with the time trial, usually are able to complete the weekend without losing sufficient time to lose their overall lead.

The Category 2 time trial was hotly contested and can see many lead changes over the weekend with 40 seconds separating the top ten riders. Shaney Buysse of SoCalCycling won by 13 seconds of Matthew Carinio. Nearly all top finishers were from California or Utah.

Chris Lyman trounced the field by 1:36 to lead the 30+ masters event, this should be sufficient for the win on Sunday. Larry Nolan finished a not so close 2nd, and Billy Innes from California is in third.

The Masters 40+ race will be one to watch along with the cat 2 race as the top 7 riders are separated by 1:08. A few time bonuses in the road race on Saturday and criterium Sunday can shake up the standings substantially. Former Pan Am games champion Louie Amelburu from Las Vegas took the win, and has a 7 second lead over Bob McCall and James Silverman is close at 11 seconds.

The Women Pro field should be interesting. Molly Van Houweling took the win by 4 seconds over Carmen Small. It will be a tough defense of that lead over the weekend. Catherine Dickson is in 3rd at 59 seconds.

A small contingent of Juniors from California invaded Valley of the Sun and dominated the 17/18 field taking the top 3 places. Lucas Eamon posted an 8 second victory.

Racing continues on Saturday 2/13 with a road race near Casa Grande, between Phoenix and Tucson. And completes on Sunday 2/14 with a downtown criterium in front of the State Capital.
