Choo! Choo! for the Chicago and Alton Railroad Depot

Hot Fun in the Summertime Series

I just love the sights and sounds of trains going across railroad tracks. It may be because as a youngster I lived not too far away from train tracks.

The Chicago and Alton Railroad Depot located at 318 West Pacific Avenue in Independence, Missouri is a great place for train enthusiasts such as me.

You can't help but notice the attention-getting 9 foot clock and an original restored Railway Express wagon on the depot platform.

This two-story museum is loaded with a chock-full of interesting items. The first floor is where you'll find the waiting room, stationmaster's room and baggage room. Traveling up to the second floor is the kitchen, dining room, bedroom and parlor.

When I visited here I was transported and transfixed back in time. The artifacts in the display room were quite intriguing. Visitors will see hundreds of railroad pieces of memorabilia and artifacts.

I enjoyed seeing the original waiting room benches and old Chicago and Alton posters. There is also telegraph items, a wooden icebox and various miscellaneous things.

This museum is operated by The "Friends of The Chicago & Alton Depot". They are a not-for-profit all volunteer group who work diligently in preserving this historical icon.

The depot is available to rent out for special events and social functions.

While the admission is free they gladly welcome your donations.

Hours of operations are Sunday from 12:30 to 4:30, Monday from 9:30 to 4:30 and Thursday through Saturday from 9:30 to 4:30. It is open from April to October. Their phone number is 816-325-7955 and website is www.chicagoalton1879depot.com.

If you have an hour to spare, I would highly recommend a visit here.

Funny how trains have an effect on people. For years I lived two houses away from the tracks. If the train was late, I couldn't fall asleep! And the second one every morning was my alarm clock!
