Choose a Prepaid Phone Service Based on Cost, Coverage and Value Added Services

Selecting your preferred handset is only the first part of purchasing a prepaid phone service. Now you have to choose which service you would be using along with your handset. Here are some of the things you should consider when picking your prepaid service.

Area of Coverage

Certain locales only have certain carriers operating within them. Find out which prepaid phone service providers operate in your locality, and add them to the list of carriers that you will consider. Not only should your prepaid phone service provider operate in the area that you live, it should operate in the areas that you would most likely go.

For example, if you have a job that involves constant travel to New York or other states, you would want your prepaid phone service provider to have coverage in these states as well. Take note of whether your prepaid phone supports calls when you are overseas. Some carriers, but not all offer roaming capabilities. Don't be caught overseas with any means to call back home.

Cost of Services

Ask how much each of the services that are provided by your prepaid phone service provider costs. You have to be aware of how much your phone usage will cost you, and how quickly your airtime will run out. Also ask for how much calling and messaging people who are covered by other service providers would cost. Some prepaid phone service providers charge extra for calls and messages exchanged with phones under other mobile phone service providers. Check out how much an airtime top-up will cost. Unless you are intending to switch to another service provider in the near future, you should factor in the costs of airtime top-ups when you select your prepaid phone service providers.

Services Provided

Find out about the various services that your preferred prepaid phone service provider offers. Match these services with what you intend to use this phone for. You want to pay for what you use, so pick the phone service provider that allows you to buy only the features that you will use. You should not end up paying for services that you will never use. Also match the services provided with the handset that you would be using. Not all services provided by your prepaid phone service provider may be supported by your handset. This is especially true if you have purchased a lower-end handset.

Units

Certain prepaid phone service providers only carry certain mobile phone models. If the prepaid phone service provider that you are looking at does not offer the phone model that you have in mind, consider choosing the prepaid phone service provider that offers it. Don't find yourself buying a phone that you do not want.
