Choosing an Alarm System for Your Home

Alarm systems are an invaluable purchase to make for your home. Whether you live alone or with others, an alarm system is a good idea. There are several factors you should consider when choosing an alarm system.

Alarm systems can range in cost from free to several hundreds of dollars. Free systems are generally installed in apartments and condos or new home purchases. Though the alarm system itself and the installation may be free, the monitoring service will probably cost extra. However, you don't have to pay for the monitoring service to use the alarm itself. It can still be armed and disarmed. Often, if an alarm system is triggered the intruder will leave because they don't want to be caught. They won't take the chance that the system isn't monitored and stick around in most cases. Also, neighbors could hear them and call for help as well.

There are different styles of alarm systems as well. Some have a key code that activates and deactivates the system. Others use a lock and key set up to arm and disarm. With either style, if you have monitoring service, you will also need a code word. This is in case you don't deactivate the alarm within the allotted time, the dispatcher from the service will call and ask if everything is okay. The code word ensures that you are a person who is authorized to use the system, and not an intruder. Choose a code word that is easy for your family to remember but that is obscure enough to not be easily guessed.

Safeguarding your alarm system codes is also a concern. You shouldn't write your code down anywhere it can be found and recognized as the alarm code. This also goes for the code word for the dispatchers. Spare keys to deactivate the alarm should be stored in a place that isn't quickly accessible for someone who is unfamiliar to the home.

By considering your home and habits you should be able to choose the correct alarm system for your needs. If you have young children, consider putting the alarm key pad out of their reach to prevent false alarms. Many areas will charge you for a false alarm if the police come to your home to investigate.

If you have elderly members in your home having an emergency hot key for an ambulance may be something you want to add. For homes with sliding glass doors a glass break detector that trips the alarm system is a good idea.

No matter what your living arrangements or income level, there are alarm system options for you. By taking the time to set up an alarm system when you first move into your home, you are adding a level of security and comfort to your life. Installing an alarm system usually only takes one day. If your alarm system deters even one intruder or calls an ambulance one time when your family needs it, it will have paid for itself.
