Choosing a Baby Name

Leslie Boe
Being pregnant with a child brings you many decisions to make. Most of them have to do with health. However many people think choosing a name is one of the fun decisions they get to make. Selecting a name really should be fun, but given serious thought.

Choosing the name of a baby is serious business folks. There are some people named for cars, seasons, stars in the sky, stars in Hollywood, days of the week, months of the year, cities, and the list goes on. Those reasons may be great with the parents and all of those names are good, but is any thought put into what kind of teasing the child will encounter in grade school, high school, college, on the job, and from friends?

The name they have been given may leave them with no respect from others, or maybe they have a name that they are always struggling to live up to. (Being named after a famous person.) The person may be judged as a person of no substance and therefore, no brain. This could affect their job success.

Some names sound like a name you would have encountered thirty years ago. Only now, it has an unusual spelling. (ex. Brian = Bryan) It seems the "old" spelling is too archaic to be used now days. It just is not hip enough. The hip spelling may be cute to the parents, but it could be a detriment to the child in future years.

Some of the children born these days are given names that are not commonly used. These are the names that were ordinary fifty plus years ago. Those names, generally, are good, sturdy names that others will have difficulty finding a way to tease a child.

Of course, any name, paired with the last name, could be subject for teasing.

You mean Seymore Dick would not be a good name to name your son? LOL! Good read! I never could figure out why some people gave their children names that even by the age of 5 they still couldn't pronouce little lone spell!

I couldn't agree more, Sophie. Thankfully, when I went to school, a lot of children had names that were common such as Sarah, Kim, Elizabeth, Matthew and Ben. These children did not get picked on because they had unusual names or names that could not be pronounced or spelled correctly. I feel sorry for children nowadays who are treated like trophies by their parents and given ridiculous names.
