At some point and time, you will be in the market for a new bathtub. Usually, a bathtub is one of the items in your house that has not been replaced in a long time. The task of replacing a bathtub can be extremely difficult and therefore is seldom done. But when you decide to do a complete bathroom remodel, replacing your bathtub should be a priority.

One of the few times when replacing your bathtub is relatively easy is when you bathroom is bare, stripped to the studs for a remodel and ready for a full overhaul. This is the time when choosing a bathtub becomes a task. There are numerous choices on the market and every choice has its advantages and disadvantages. There whirlpool tubs, standard cast iron tubs, acrylic tubs and the list goes on. So how do you make the right choice for your bathroom remodel? The choice isn't easy, but by looking at the pros and cons of each type of bathtub, you will be able to make the right choice for your needs.

One of the first tubs you will consider purchasing is also one of the cheapest options. The standard steel tub, used in many homes when first built, is cost effective and can last for many years. It lightweight makes it easy to install, but the choices are limited to color only as the design is fairly standard as just a simple rectangle. The tubs sub $100 price makes its an affordable choice and its relatively durable, though prone to creaking when installed.

Next up is the classic cast iron tub. This design is tried and true. It's more expensive than steel and starts around $300. Its heavy which makes it very difficult to work with and will require that you have a few helpers on hand to install it. Most recommend against using it on a second floor bath due to its weight which is nearly 300lbs. There are several different cast iron models and they still set the mark in terms of durability, quietness, and long lasting beauty.

Next up is a product made exclusively by American Standard called Americast. This is essentially a steel tub lined with insulation giving it the quietness of cast iron, but at a weight closer to a standard steel tub. It's priced comparatively to cast iron tubs, but its low weight makes it easier to install. In terms of durability, its on even ground with a steel tub, but not quite at the level of cast iron.

Finally you come to the acrylic tub. Essentially made from plastic, this type of tub is so light that one person can install. Install can be tricky as the tub must be fully supported to prevent it from cracking. An acrylic tub is also prone to discoloration over time and scratches more easily than most other types of tubs. The benefit of an acrylic tub is there is a large selection of varying styles due to the easy workability of the product. An acrylic tub can also have molded in water jets making it into a whirlpool tub. Its cost can range from a little over $100 to well over $400 depending upon the model chosen.

As you can see, there are countless choices in bathtub materials. The one that is right for you is the one that meets the needs for your bathroom remodel project. With a little guidance, selecting a bathtub is an easy choice. Completing the bathroom remodel with the perfect tub is as easy as understanding each material and choosing what's right for you.
